Students from various schools in Christchurch came together Monday to pay tribute to the victims of the New Zealand mosque attacks by performing a haka.

They performed the traditional Indigenous Maori dance to mourn the victims and honour the dead, then laid flowers and held a moment of silence.

For many, joining the vigil for the victims of the mass shooting was a much-needed opportunity to soothe their minds after a wrenching few days. Most of the students spent hours locked down in their schools on Friday as police tried to determine if any other shooters were involved in the attacks.

Several others in New Zealand have also performed the dance in honour of the victims in recent days.

At least 50 people have died after two mosque attacks were carried out by a gunman on Friday.

The attack has left those in the Christchurch community, as well as others around the world, holding vigils and memorials for the victims.

In Canada, memorials were held across the country over the weekend.

Many of the victims of the shooting had moved to New Zealand to seek better lives in a country known for its beauty, friendliness and safety.

Among the victims are engineers, business owners, students and a goalkeeper for the national futsal team. It is a modified form of soccer, typically played indoors.
