St Mary's School Overton-on-dee

This presentation aims to give you a taster of our school, whether you are a first time parent/carer to our school or considering sending your child here in the future or simply interested in our school. It offers a picture of life at St. Mary’s and illustrates some of the amazing opportunities your child will experience on their learning journey here.

Our school is a very popular village school with a caring Christian ethos. We are situated in the beautiful village of Overton near the border with England. The school is well supported by the community and has strong links to the church, a hard-working Parent Teacher Association and an active Governing body.

St Mary’s is a school with an excellent reputation. Children lie at the heart of our school and are given the very best opportunities to achieve their full potential. We aim for excellence in achievement and personal development by having a stimulating curriculum, which closely matches the needs of our children and encourages them to be confident, motivated and enthusiastic learners. We believe that learning should be fun, that children should have a childhood enriched by the highest standard of education and that school days should provide happy memories to last a lifetime.

At St Mary's we believe that...

Educational provision for young children is holistic with the child at the heart of any planned curriculum. It is about adults understanding, inspiring and challenging your child’s potential for learning. Adult involvement in your child’s play is of vital importance particularly when interactions involve open questioning, shared and sustained thinking.

The environment promotes discovery and independence, with an emphasis on using the outdoor environment as a resource for children’s learning. It provides an exciting, stimulating and safe environment that promotes children’s development and natural curiosity to explore and learn through first hand experiences.

Year 3 and 4 exploring forest school

We place great emphasis on developing:

  • skills and understanding.
  • personal, social emotional, physical and intellectual well-being so as to develop the whole child.
  • positive attitudes to learning.
  • self-esteem and self-confidence to experiment, investigate, learn new things and form new relationships.
  • creative and expressive skills and observation to encourage their development as individuals with different ways of responding to experiences.
  • outdoor activities where they can have first-hand experience of solving real problems in aspects such as mathematics, science and art and learn about conservation and sustainability.

The value of play

Through their play in small groups children practise and consolidate their learning, play with ideas, experiment, take risks, solve problems and make decisions.

Small group learning allows children to develop an understanding of themselves and the world in which they live. The development of children’s self-image and feelings of self-worth and self-esteem are at the core of what we do at St Mary’s.

Children learn by...

  • Observing and using their senses
  • Experimenting and exploring
  • Copying or imitating
  • Enjoying their learning
  • Hands on experiences
  • Working alone/ in a group or with a partner
  • Communicating effectively with others
  • Asking questions
  • Making mistakes
  • Listening
  • Teaching someone else
  • Taking risks
  • Repeating and revisiting skills
  • Experiencing
  • Having time to reflect
  • Selecting and using appropriate equipment
  • Achieving success

How do we plan for this to happen?

  • Small groups so that children are given individual attention and we are able to support their learning and follow their interests.
  • Providing opportunities for the children to develop their skills in an environment that enables them to take risks.
  • Providing first-hand experiences allowing them to develop skills and confidence.
  • Provide learning experiences in the indoor and outdoor environments.

What is our role?

Adults are there to:

  • Support
  • SHARE skills
  • Talk
  • Listen
  • To promote a “can do” attitude
  • To observe
  • To model
  • To question and respond to questions
  • To offer constructive feedback
  • To celebrate achievements and goals
  • To provide a safe, secure and enriching learning environment: in terms of emotional, intellectual as well as physical development.
  • To have high expectations of the children’s play and what they can achieve

Art plays an important part of our learning journey at St Mary's

During times when we couldn't be together we still found ways to create and share our experiences.

We are innovative and love trying out new experiences...
