Useful Information for Pregnant Women Leaving Ukraine

Health care during pregnancy

In Hungary, the care for pregnant women is provided by obstetricians/gynaecologists and health visitors. All pregnant protection seekers have free access to these health care providers, as pregnant women are recognized as requiring special care. In addition to the use of healthcare services, it is also possible to get prescribed medication for care in pregnancy with discount.

Whether it is a gynaecological clinic or a health visitor’s consultancy, the responsible health care provider will be appointed according to your address.

Protection seeker families are assisted by health visitor’s mentoring network at the settlement they live in. These institutions offer the following professional services:

  • screening of pregnant women for infectious diseases,
  • care for pregnant women with an acute illness,
  • ensuring the healthcare services for chronically ill pregnant women,
  • Providing consultations/plan for pregnant women in need of special care,
  • basic provision of pregnant care,
  • offering a referral to the obstetrics department,
  • counselling in case of other critical health issues.

There is also a Facebook group aimed at pregnant protection seekers Ukrainians and mothers with babies called LifeFlower. The group joins birth counsellors and other pregnancy healthcare specialists to help pregnant women and mothers with babies fleeing the war to Hungary. They can help pregnant women by counselling thorough the pregnancy, providing physical and emotional assistance, and preparing them for the labour and breastfeeding. Whether it’s a future mom, a mom with an infant, or if the health issue is not connected to pregnancy, they will help you find the right specialist. All services of the LifeFlower Group are free of charge.

Support at the childbirth

Pregnant women fleeing Ukraine are entitled free of charge childbirth services with the same amount support as the Hungarians. Free care is available in all publicly funded institutions, i.e., in state, municipal and church medical institutions. The choice of the institution normally is made based on your address.

Some private providers have also offered to take in Ukrainian protection seekers, we list them separately.

The LifeFlower Facebook group was created to help the Ukrainian protection seeker mothers. Among specialists in the group, there are trained doulas who will happily provide personal support during childbirth. They can also assist in postpartum rehabilitation and breastfeeding issues during crib weeks.
