Master Classes

An EduCHI Master Class is a short (~60-minute) interactive virtual training session on a particular topic, concept, or teaching method that HCI educators can incorporate into an assignment, class, or program.

A series of Master Classes will be scheduled as virtual sessions in the weeks and months preceding the EduCHI 2023 symposium.

All times are in Anywhere on Earth (AoE) time zone. For each date below, the last time to submit is when date ends AoE. Check your local time in AoE.

  • Submission deadline: Friday, 3 February 2023
  • Decision Notification: Friday, 17 February 2023
  • Organizer Confirmation: Friday, 24 February 2023 (tentative)

Template: ACM Master Article Submission template (no more than 6 pages), including: background, organizer(s), proposed format & structure, abstract, preferred dates/times, references (if needed)

Selection Process

Reviewed.

Master Class sessions will be selected through evaluation by a small jury made up of the symposium organizers. Jurors will consider both the fit and relevance to the EduCHI community.

Preparing and Submitting a Master Class

A Master Class proposal should be prepared according to the ACM Master Article Submission Template (single column) and must be submitted through the article submission system as a single PDF file. The proposal should be no longer than 6 pages and have the following structure:

  • Background: Describe the topic of your Master Class and provide a rationale for why you think it would be important, useful, or otherwise impactful for the EduCHI community. If possible, state concrete learning outcomes for the Master Class.
  • Organizer(s): Provide the background of the organizers and explain their expertise in relation to the proposed topic. Can include multiple organizers, though we recommend no more than three.
  • Proposed Format & Structure: Provide details about your plan for the Master Class. How will you plan to use the 60 minutes? Will it include a lecture, interactive exercises, group discussions, etc.? Keep in mind that all Master Class sessions will be held virtually.
  • Abstract: Provide a short (150-word) description of the Master Class that will be published and circulated by the organizers to promote your session.
  • Preferred Dates/Times: Propose a few potential dates and times for your Master Class session. Sessions must be scheduled between February-April 2023. Please make sure to specify the time zone for each slot you propose.
  • References: Please add any relevant references or relevant readings, using the CHI reference format.

Additional Information

  • Master Class sessions will be free and open to the entire EduCHI community
  • At least one Master Class organizer is expected to register for EduCHI 2023
  • All Master Class sessions will be held virtually; please consider this format when proposing your session
