ICYMI - 2023 Internet Minute

ICYMI – 2023 Internet Minute Infographic by eDiscovery Today and LTMG!: eDiscovery Trends

On a day where few people are working, we decided to do an encore post! So, here is the 2023 Internet Minute Infographic, by eDiscovery Today and LTMG!

From 2016 to 2021, one of my favorite things to cover every year has been the Internet Minute infographic that was published by AllAccess.com and Lori Lewis. The 2021 Internet Minute infographic (covered by me here) is the all-time most popular post ever on eDiscovery Today – for now!

Last year, however, there was no Internet Minute infographic! I even reached out to Lori Lewis on Twitter to ask about it. She indicated they would be putting it out again, but it never happened. I get it – it’s not easy to put it together! I appreciate everything AllAccess.com and Lori Lewis did to publish it for several years and thank them for the inspiration!

So, this year, I decided to create one myself – with a little help from my friends! In discussing the possibility of putting one together, the team at Legal Tech Media Group (LTMG) expressed interest in helping by creating the infographic. So, I did the research and pulled together 15 total stats, then provided them to LTMG to create the 2023 Internet Minute Infographic you see above! Looks fantastic – thanks to Cathy Kenton, Jay Stromberg and the team at LTMG for creating a terrific looking infographic!

Here it is again, full-sized:

Here’s a couple of key things to note about the 2023 Internet Minute Infographic:

  1. All the Stats are Sourced: I didn’t just want to pull numbers “out of thin air” – I wanted to be able to point to sources for each of the stats. As it turned out, many of the sourced stats had to be extrapolated (i.e., take the stat for a day, a month or a year and divide by the appropriate number to get the stat per minute). Regardless, all the stats are sourced from available sites, and the links and extrapolations are available here – for better or worse! (Side note: finding good stats is hard, so I appreciate why we didn’t see one last year!).
  2. The Focus is Primarily on Stats with eDiscovery Significance: This is an eDiscovery blog, so (of course) I tried to obtain numbers for data sources that would have significance for eDiscovery (or related disciplines like cybersecurity, data privacy and AI). So, there are per minute stats for Slack, Teams and Zoom, as well as stats for things like emoji(s) sent per minute, photos created per minute with smartphones, fake accounts removed on Facebook per minute, even visits to ChatGPT per minute!

Since we published it on the third anniversary of eDiscovery Today, the 2023 Internet Minute Infographic has already been hugely popular, with more than 2.5 times the number of views of any eDiscovery Today post this year! Still, some of you may not have seen it. So, on this day before Independence Day with a lot of people off, we decided to publish an encore of it here!

  1. One question,…. you say “2023 Internet…”,…. but you publish that in July,… what data are included? a sample,… few months? because it’s clear that isn’t all the year…

    Thanks

    • Hi Joan,

There’s a link to the sources of the stats in the “All the Stats are Sourced” section to a document where I identify the sources of the stats. They are numbers (or extrapolations of numbers) that were available at the time I originally published the Internet Minute Infographic (which was back in April, this was an ICYMI post as it was a holiday for many of us in the US).

I plan to publish the 2024 Internet Minute infographic in the next few weeks (hopefully).
