Challenges addressed by the project

EARMA is coordinating an important project under the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme that will support the strengthening of an inclusive research management community in Europe.

RM ROADMAP (Creating Framework Conditions for Research Management to Strengthen the European Research Area) will create a roadmap for the future of research management (RM) in Europe and establish a supportive framework to facilitate its implementation. It will be conducted over 36 months and is funded under the HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ERA-01 call (2024-2027) with a grant of 1.499.997,00 €.

Considering the current landscape of the profession of research management in Europe, it is important to avoid fragmentation, inconsistency and the lack of interoperability between organisations and countries in the ERA and Europe. This improvement could be drastic and game changing in the longer term in comparison to the current siloed approach, where many systems and organisations create their own models.

Consortium

Coordinator: EARMA

Partners: HÉTFA RESEARCH INSTITUTE (HÉTFA), UNIVERSIDADE NOVA DE LISBOA (NOVA), ASSOCIATION OF EUROPEAN SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROFESSIONALS (ASTP), CROWDHELIX LIMITED (CHX), THE CYPRUS INSTITUTE (CYI), JANSSEN PHARMACEUTICA (JANSSEN), UNA EUROPA (UNA)

Main project objective/mission

To enhance access to excellence, the overarching objective of RM ROADMAP is to identify and adapt the RM capital base of the EU, including the widening countries, of its current and future RM workforce to emerging needs, thereby enhancing the EU’s competitiveness and sustainining its economic performance.

RM ROADMAP will connect existing European networks on a smart community platform which will enable an unprecedented cocreation process in RM. This cocreation process will gather the existing communities and expand upon them to reach two main objectives: (1) Create and inform a bottom-up consensus on the future of RM in a roadmap; (2) Inform about the existing training, networking, funding and mobility opportunities.

Benefits for EARMA community

The EARMA Community of Research Managers and Administrators will benefit from this initiative by contributing to:

  • A comprehensive assessment of the RM community potential for a more standardised profession and terminology as well as recommendations and guidelines on RM definition of the profession, career development, skills and competence matrix, and Europe-wide training and networking scheme.
  • A Roadmap to improve the RM system in Europe and create a business case to raise awareness about the role of research management as well as a value proposition for policy-makers and institutional leaders. The Roadmap will offer an overview of the value of building capacity in research management from the perspective of various actors within the R&I system. Within the frame of the project, there will be a Research Management incubator to support (national) networks startup.
  • An Ambassador Network bringing together community builders and leaders from countries across Europe. Ambassadors, who may be national or regional community builders and online moderators, will gather intelligence and input from national and local RM communities. They will advocate for the RM ROADMAP project's prospective users and promote its resources and services in their home countries. Furthermore, they will function as online moderators to facilitate the co-creation of the future of research management in Europe.
