Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

Screen grab of the Tithe Map polygons
Screen grab of the Tithe Map polygons

This collection contains a dataset from a project commissioned by Devon Heritage Centre and Devon County Council Historic Environment Record to produce a digitised dataset of Devon’s tithe maps with consistent apportionment details. The project was undertaken by Wil Adnams of Lovell Johns Ltd.

The specific aims of the project were to:

  • Capture the tithe map boundaries as GIS polygons from the input raster mosaic;
  • Merge the input tithe apportionment spreadsheets;
  • Validate and create consistent entries for four of the tithe apportionment fields;
  • Match the tithe apportionment records to the GIS polygons using the plot number and parish.

There are some duplicate entries where a single polygon is associated with more than one apportionment transcription.

Some areas are missing due to unsuitability (especially damage or fragility) of the original maps. In a few cases, no tithe map was made for the parish, because the land within it was not subject to tithes. For more information, or to view or obtain a copy of the original hard copy maps, please contact Devon Archives and Local Studies Service.

The tithe datasets should not be relied upon for legal, planning or development purposes; there may be errors or omissions in the datasets. For commercial purposes please check the originals.

Scans of the original tithe maps and apportionments, with a list of tithe dates, scales and surveyors, are made available on the Devon Historic Environment website.
