Inspiration

A team including myself has presented a project at Reboot Kerala Hackathon jointly organized by the Government of Kerala and Additional Skill Acquisition Program and were selected among the top fifteen teams. The project has been designed to make the agriculture sector more productive. This recognition boosted our confidence level. We had explored more about the possiblities to make the agriculture sector effortless yet productive. Then, we came to know about Hack to the Future 3, a Hackathon organized by Finastra in accordance with International Women Day. Since the aim of this initiative is to develop mechanisms that can address and find solutions for various kinds of biases against women in every field, we also refashioned our project to study more about the biases against women in the agriculture sector. As part of the study, with the help of officers at the Agricultural Department we interviewed women cultivators from Aleppy and Cherthala, who have been active members of Kudumbasree Units. We have also circulated Google forms with 270 responses.

What it does

This application is developed with multiple state-of-the-art tools and has mainly three screens. The log-in screen is designed with the help of authentication/feedback api's by Finastra and the rest of the screens will work with the help of UI. To acquire loans easily, this App will help to get connected with the Finastra API. Comprehensive details about different agricultural loans and the necessary documents to be submitted for the same will be available. Consumers can even apply for loans through this App. The other important facility provided in the App is, the price prediction of crops, which will be done by examining and comparing various factors such as a month, season, disaster, and crop type and many other possible factors. The ‘Rental Services’ in the App will link the people who want to lease their land and those who want to cultivate in it. ‘Other Services’ include the list of machinery, seeds, and fertilizers. The facility to book these and place the orders in order to receive them at the doorsteps of consumers is also available.

How we built it

We are trying to solve the various problems faced by women cultivators. Through data collection and survey, we have drawn the major challenges they are tackling, such as the difficulty to find the appropriate market and the inequality in the market rates given to them due to their gender identity, ignorance about the various financial supports from the Government, lack of securities to acquire loans, and unavailability of seeds and machinery. Therefore, we have developed a mobile application, which will be able to solve the above-mentioned problems.

Challenges we ran into

It was tough for us to do the fieldwork during this pandemic of Covid 19. It was hard to join together for group discussions and develop solutions in a short time period. We found it difficult to directly go to Banks and Agricultural offices for inquiries.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This mechanism will diminish the biases towards women in the agricultural field to an extent. The participation of more women in the agricultural sector will definitely bring in urban and rural development. This will also give space to women to lead agricultural projects. Efficient women entrepreneurs will also get chances to establish themselves. All these will eventually usher in women's empowerment in the agricultural sector.

What we learned

While developing this project I could gather so much information and knowledge about various things. The fieldwork helped me to walk down the aisle of so many lives and to know more about the different levels of struggles and challenges faced by women. I could able to know more about loans, and the necessary documents needed to acquire the same. I also understood the various possibilities of fast-growing technologies such as machine learning, IoT, Blockchain, etc in the agricultural sector.

What's next for tinch.

We would like to develop and launch a project combining both smart farming and this solution, to bring revolutionary changes in the agricultural sector. This is intended to lessen the existing biases towards women cultivators and lend support for their farming ventures.
