Welcome!

Welcome to the October issue of LGBT Foundation’s newsletter!

This month’s theme is Safety and we’ll be sharing a range of resources and information on how you can stay safe this spooky season!

Firstly, we would like to say a huge thank you and farewell to our Chair of Trustees, Smyth Harper, after an outstanding 7 years of exceptional leadership for and on behalf of our LGBTQ+ communities. We have seen extraordinary growth during Smyth's time as Chair, and he has been an inspiring advocate and keen supporter of Trustees, staff, and volunteers. Smyth’s tireless guidance, wisdom and passion has allowed LGBT Foundation to flourish over the past 7 years and we are extremely grateful for his support.

What would you like to see included in future LGBT Foundation newsletters?

Trans Day of Remembrance - 20th November

Trans Day of Remembrance is a time where our community comes together to commemorate and honour trans and non-binary people we have lost. There are candle lit vigils being held across the country where you can pay respects and show solidarity.

This can be a hard time for our community, especially for trans and non-binary people. We encourage you to reach out if you need support. Our Helpline number is 03453 30 30 30 or you can find our resources for trans people here.

If you want to learn more about how you can be an ally and show up for trans people, take a look at our trans ally guide.

World AIDS Day - 1st December

World AIDS Day is another important date in the LGBTQ+ calendar to remember those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS. It is also a time to dispel myths about HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of support for those affected by HIV.

If you’d like to be involved and show your support during this time, you can attend a World AIDS Day vigil or donate to support our work here.

Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. LGBT Foundation has an LGBTQ+ specific Domestic Abuse Service that offers support, practical housing advice, safety planning and advocacy, as well as access to a Resilience Group programme. If you are concerned that you may be experiencing domestic abuse, or are uncertain about what signs to watch out for, contact us via our self-referral form here.

Did you catch us on Crime Watch?

Earlier this month, two of our LGBT Foundation team members appeared in an episode of Crime Watch Live to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ domestic abuse, warning signs and reporting. Check out the video here if you missed it.

Chemsex support

Our Recovery and Sexual Health teams have been working in partnership with The Northern Sexual Health Clinic, Manchester City Council, The Men’s Room and Manchester Metropolitan University to develop an online resource on Chemsex.

The new resource is due to launch on the Chemsafe website in November and will provide information around safety, consent, sexual health and where to access support when engaging in chemsex.

Hate Crime Awareness Week

National Hate Crime Awareness Week took place earlier this month. Hate crimes occur in many forms. They can be assault, harassment or abuse and can happen online or in person. All hate crimes are motivated by a prejudice towards a person’s race, sexual orientation, religion, disability or trans status. Despite much progress in changing societal attitudes, LGBT people still experience hate crimes at alarming rates.

If you or somebody you know has experienced a hate crime, click here to access resources and advice on reporting and support available. LGBT Foundation is a Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centre. This means that you can report the hate crime you experienced to us, anonymously if you wish.

Call our Helpline on 03453 30 30 30.
