Royal Canal Premium Cycle Route Broome Bridge, Broombridge Road, Dublin 7 Non-Statutory Public Consultation

Closed 1 Aug 2019

Opened 3 Jul 2019

Overview

The Royal Canal Premium Cycle Route is a key objective of the cycle network plan for the city and is one of a number of routes being developed by Dublin City Council as part of its overall plan for 470km of safer cycling routes suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Objectives

The objective of these enabling works is to provide pedestrians and cyclists using the Royal Canal towpath with a safer means of crossing Broombridge Road, whilst also providing contra-flow (southbound) access for buses and cyclists across Broome Bridge.

Location

Broombridge Road, Dublin 7; from the junction with Bannow Road to the junction with Ballyboggan Road.

The Proposal Includes:

  • A signalised toucan crossing to enable pedestrians and cyclists using the Royal Canal towpath to cross Broombridge Road safely. Double height signal poles are proposed due to restricted sightlines across Broome Bridge for approaching vehicles. A signalised left-turn slip is also proposed for westbound cyclists on the towpath who wish to travel southbound across Broome Bridge.
  • Reconfiguration of the existing road layout between Broombridge Luas terminus and Glen Industrial Estate to provide a contra-flow route for southbound buses and cyclists only. A southbound contra-flow bus lane is proposed between Broome Bridge and Glen Industrial Estate. Traffic signals are proposed for northbound traffic immediately to the north of the entrance to the Luas terminus in order to accommodate this.
  • Traffic calming in the form of ramps on Broome Bridge and a mini roundabout at the entrance to Glen Industrial Estate.
  • Upgrading the public lighting on Broombridge Road between Bannow Road and Ballyboggan Road.
  • Dismantling and reconstruction of the retaining wall to the southwestern side of Broome Bridge, between the ESB substation and the bridge.
  • New road markings, signage, chambers and ducting that are required to accommodate these proposals.

Scheme Benefits

  • Safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists using the canal towpath.
  • Two-way access for buses and cyclists across Broome Bridge.
  • Reduced traffic speeds across Broome Bridge.
  • Accommodating a shift to more sustainable modes of transport.
