Tires: Purchases to Mexico Fall 23%

From January to July 2020, companies in the countries of the region imported new tires from Mexico for $9 million, 23% less than what was reported for the same period in 2019.

Variation of Imports by Market
During the first seven months of 2020, companies in Costa Rica and Nicaragua increased their purchases of new tires from Mexican companies, reporting year-on-year variations of 92% and 6%, respectively.

The other Central American countries reduced their imports from Mexico. In the case of Guatemala, purchases fell by 17%, in Honduras by 31%, in Panama by 39% and in El Salvador by 63%.

Central America: Purchases by Country
From January to July 2020, the main Central American tire buyer to Mexico was Panama, with $2.9 million, followed by Guatemala, with $2.4 million, and Costa Rica, with $1.6 million.

For the period in question, imports from Honduras amounted to $700,000, those from Nicaragua to $600,000 and those from Salvadoran companies to $400,000.

Central American Companies Buy Less Mexican Tires
Between the first seven months of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported by the countries of the region fell by 23%, from $11.3 million to $8.7 million.

This drop contrasts with the increase reported from January to July 2019, when the year-on-year variation was 42%.
