Description

The S3A: Future Spatial Audio project is a research collaboration in 3D audio and visual processing between the Universities of Surrey, Salford, and Southampton, and BBC Research & Development, running from April 2014 to June 2019. The partnership aims to unlock the creative potential of 3D sound—particularly with object-based audio—to provide immersive experiences to the general public at home or on the move.

Research on the project has led to developments in understanding of spatial audio and speech perception, new reproduction methods, object-based production tools and applications, audio-visual processing algorithms, and more. Outputs include over 100 scientific publications, the VISR open-source software framework for object-based audio rendering, a set of production tool plug-ins, public-facing demonstrators, and new reproduction technologies (including a soundbar with listener tracking for binaural reproduction that is being developed further by start-up company AudioScenic). S3A has also produced an award-winning VR audio experience and ground-breaking technology for immersive listener experiences at home.

In this event, an overview of the project will be given. We will focus on the object-based production workflow from a technical and creative viewpoint through conversations with experienced sound designer Eloise Whitmore (Naked Productions), demonstrating how the freely-available S3A production suite can be used to create audio content that is immersive and personalisable. The event will also include live demonstrations of S3A research and audio technologies.
