Do you have experience of photographing and lighting 2D and 3D objects in a studio environment? Do you want the opportunity to photograph a wide-variety of objects in our Stephen Hawking Collection?
In May 2021, the Science Museum Group acquired the contents of Stephen Hawking’s office – hundreds of individual items from the mundane to the extraordinary. These objects will be preserved by the Science Museum Group, enabling the public to explore key aspects of Hawking’s life and career as a world-class theoretical physicist, popular communicator of science and as an individual who lived with motor neurone disease for more than five decades.
As part of this acquisition, we are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Photographer to join the Collections Services team to photograph and digitise this collection, which are housed at the National Collections Centre in Wiltshire.
In this role you will be responsible for creating enhanced photography of collection objects, copy 2D material from the collections archives and create on-brand communications photography to promote this collection externally. You will carry out post-production and apply metadata, making images accessible through our DAMS for all users.
Within this project, photography provides a professional, technical and creative service making digital content for a diverse range of clients and stakeholders within SMG. You will be closely working with the Stephen Hawking Collection team to uphold collections care procedures and foster excellent workflows within the collections services department.
Joining us you will have experience of photographing and lighting 2D and 3D objects in a studio environment and using Capture One and Adobe Suite. You will have experience of colour management from capture to output and the ability to use your initiative to solve issues. Crucially you will have excellent planning, organising and coordinating skills in order to deliver photography requests on time, you will also have the ability to communicate technical challenges to clients, using influencing and negotiating skills to ensure successful shoots.
