What’s New

Version 2.0.1

Important Note:
1. A local item will be deleted when you delete its copy from the Synology Photos mobile app. However, if you delete the item directly from your phone's built-in app, the copy will still exist on your Synology NAS.
2. Changes to "Free Up Space” feature:
- once a file is backed up or uploaded to Synology NAS, Synology Photos flags it as ready to be freed up from your phone.
- if you move the file's copy on Synology NAS to a different Space, you won’t be able to free up the original file from your phone.
3. For users updating from version 1.5: Updating to this version will not trigger duplicating files due to renaming or moving them to a different Space.
4. For users updating from version 2.0: If you have previously renamed the files or moved them to another Space, to prevent them from being backed up again and creating duplicated files, turn off the photo backup. Re-enable it and choose "back up new photos only”.

What's New:
1. Supports viewing all photos, regardless of whether they are backed up or not, in the mobile app after backup is enabled.
2. Supports backing up modified photos again to keep all changes after backup is enabled.
3. Supports the notification for out-of-sync changes on the Synology Photos mobile app when moving photos to another Space or deleting them from File Station, Synology Photos web portal, SMB, etc.
4. Supports backing up and uploading multiple files at the same time for better efficiency.
5. Supports different backup options:
- Back up new photos only: Back up photos and videos taken from now on. Changes made to previous items will also be backed up as new files.
- Resume tasks: Continue the progress of the last backup task. Changes made to previous photos will be backed up as new files.
- Scan and back up all photos: If backed-up items have been moved to another Space, renamed, or deleted from Synology NAS, they will be backed up again. You may need to sign out of the Synology Photos mobile app and sign in again to select this option.

Fixed Issues:
1. Fixed an issue where a download might not be successful if you leave lightbox mode before it completes.
2. Fixed an issue where the limit of the cache size might be exceeded.
3. Fixed an issue when updating to version 2.0 where crash might happen unexpectedly.

Will it back up?

I recently purchased a Synology DiskStation and have been attempting to back up my photos from iCloud Photos. This chugged along well for the first 50k photos, but recently it will get stuck and try to upload the same photo over and over again very rapidly. The only solution is to delete the photo from my library and then the sync will continue until another photo jams up the sync a few photos later. I’ve left an iPad Pro doing a Focused Sync all night only to find it synced 5 pictures.

It seems like this app needs better error handling—maybe set aside sync failures and try them later rather than just trying them repeatedly.

Look elsewhere - basics don’t work

I’m a as much as a Synology fan boy as anyone but this program is just sub par. Firstly I set a custom backup location and then with each iOS app update( I suspect) it defaults back to my personal space and all my photos are now in some random folder that I have to hunt down and then move to my 2023 folder. All it’s got to do is take the photos from my iPhone and put em on my NAS but then when I used the app to show my pals some photos I just get blank images, come on I have a 1/2 TB iPhone and set to unlimited cache and it still randomly decides to down load all my photos or sometimes not. On mobile I don’t need a 48 Megapixel photo just a bloody 100k thumbnail would do but mostly my photos are MIA when I need to show some of my English friends a picture of my cat! Sometimes the UI works and shows folder view then sometimes it doesn’t. I’m on the latest M1 hardware, newish iPhone 14 Pro and it just seems to be a pain to use. Just give me a simply program that can download all my photos 50k to my phone with little thumbnails so I can show my pals a picture of my cat! We don’t need all this sharing, AI recognition, moments stuff - just get the basics to WORK! I suggest reassigning the current team to another project and get some new folks onboard - to just get the basics working!

Great, but needs “moments”

I LOVE that this app auto backs up my photos instantly, but one major feature it’s missing is something similar to iOS moments. I really like seeing the moments the iOS photos app creates with the photo collages with music. My phone is almost out of space from all the photos and videos but I’m hesitant to hit the free up space in this app because it’s gonna wipe everything off my phone and I’ll no longer get the occasional moments from iOS photos. Or even integrate this app with iOS photos so it can read the pics off the nas and do all the leg work just have the nas as the source folder. Another nice feature would be if we could choose to only delete photos from our phone that’s older than 6 months or a year.

The auto backup did save me a few months ago when I lost my phone. It has ALL my pics with my kids and I hadn’t looked in a long time to see if the auto backup had been doing it’s job, so I panicked and jumped on my computer right away and lo and behold, all my photos were there on the nas like they were supposed to be. That changed my situation from losing priceless photos to only being out a few hundred bucks for my phone.
