Apple Music Home Session: beabadoobee

An iconic US songwriter figured heavily in beabadoobee’s thinking when recording her exclusive Apple Music Home Session. “My set-up was how I imagine Daniel Johnston would have recorded his tracks,” she tells Apple Music. “I tried recording inside a little bedroom with a four-track belonging to my boyfriend’s brother for a DIY sound. I also recorded outside to capture the nature and birds.” The London singer-songwriter also wanted to pay further tribute to Johnston. “I chose to cover Daniel Johnston’s ‘Walking the Cow’ because he is one of the my favourite songwriters of all time,” she says. “Doing that song reminded me how pure and honest his writing can be.” Elsewhere, we’re given another treat. “I also chose ‘Care’ because it’s my first single from my debut album Fake It Flowers,” she says. “This is the first proper acoustic recording, so it was fun to do an alternate recording.” The period of lockdown in the UK afforded beabadoobee some time to finish up her long-awaited debut album proper—and reassess her priorities. “Lockdown at the very start was weird to adjust to, but it’s been good to reflect on everything happening in the world and to think about what’s important to me,” she says. “With the finishing touches now on my album, I’m personally exploring new sounds—just evolving from what I’ve done, and into another era of ’90s and ’00s music that I really love.”
