Overnight closures from Sunday 10 March
From Sunday 10 March, there will be a series of overnight closures to complete work at the Market Place and Queen Street junction and other essential works.
The work will allow for a phased traffic switch to take place from 8 April as well as the permanent removal of the pedestrian crossing at Market Place. From Monday 11 March, the entry slip road for Queen Street will also be closed for up to nine weeks while work takes place.
The traffic switch will change the road layout to allow the two eastbound lanes and the two westbound lanes to run either side of the new underpass.
Following the switch, there will be no reduction in the number of lanes and two lanes will remain in place for traffic continuing eastbound on the A63 through Hull.
The following overnight closures will be in place on the A63 between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way. All closures will be in place between 8pm and 6am the next day:
- Overnight closure westbound only - Sunday 10 March.
- Full overnight closure - eastbound & westbound - Monday 11 March to Friday 15 March.
- Overnight closure westbound only - Sunday 17 March.
- Full overnight closure eastbound & westbound - Monday 18 March to Friday 22 March.
- Full overnight closure eastbound & westbound - Monday 25 March to Wednesday 27 March
- Full overnight closure eastbound & westbound - Tuesday 2 April to Friday 5 April
- Full overnight closure eastbound & westbound - Saturday 6 April.
A fully signed diversion will be in place.

Eastbound closure - Wednesday 21 February 8pm-6am
The A63 eastbound will be closed between the Daltry Street flyover and Roger Millward Way from 8pm until 6am the next morning for essential work to support a phased traffic switch, a key part of the A63 Castle Street scheme. The work needs to be completed safely overnight while eastbound lanes are closed.
During the closure, a fully signed diversion route will be in place.

On Sunday 18 February the A63 Castle Street will be closed westbound from 8pm until Monday at 6am.
The essential work is planned alongside our existing eastbound closure taking place over the full weekend:

New Year to bring Eastbound weekend closures as work progresses on underpass
A new split-level junction, a critical part of the upgrade, is being created by lowering the level of the A63 to create an underpass, with Ferensway and Commercial Road crossing the A63.
This is a critical part of the work to allow us to move towards our next phased traffic switch. The road layout will be switched to allow the two eastbound lanes and the two westbound lanes to run either side of the new underpass. At the moment, all four lanes are to the south of the new underpass, so this requires significant planning.
To allow work to be carried out safely, there will be six eastbound weekend closures on the A63 between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way starting in January. This will include the Ferensway off and on slip roads and Market Place junction.
Work is being carried out on the weekends. This will allow lanes to be kept open on the A63 eastbound and slip roads during the peak weekday, daytime travelling hours.
The full weekend closures will be in place as follows. Each closure will be in place between 8pm on Friday to 6am the following Monday:
- 12 -15 January
- 19 - 22 January
- 26 - 29 January
- 2 - 5 February
- 9 - 12 February
- 16 -19 February
Some of the equipment we use may be noisy in some areas, however we will be completing any noisier work as early as we can.
Diversion routes:
The diversion route for the Ferensway entry slip will be Anlaby Road to Rawling Way, following the same route in reverse for the Ferensway exit slip.
Traffic heading eastbound beyond Hull city centre from the A63 will be diverted at the junction with the A15 and directed via the A164, A1079 and A1033, before rejoining the A63.
Hull City game - Friday 12 January
Hull City v Norwich City, Friday 12th January - there will be an eastbound closure on the A63 between Daltry Street flyover and Roger Millward Way from 8pm. This will include the Ferensway off and on slip roads.
The A63 Westbound will remain open. Local diversion routes will be in place from 8pm.
Traffic in and around the city is expected to be busier than usual so please allow extra time for your journey.
For away supporters travelling on the A63 eastbound towards Hull, we advise following the brown information signs for ‘Football Matchday Parking’ prior to the City Centre and exiting on the same route after the game.

Overnight closures as creation of new Hull city centre junction takes step forward
We are progressing essential works on a new junction at Mytongate as part of the major project to improve journeys in Hull.
The new split-level junction is a critical part of the upgrade. It is being created by lowering the level of the A63 to create an underpass, with Ferensway and Commercial Road crossing the A63.
To allow work on the new junction to be carried out safely, there will be a series of overnight closures on the A63 between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way. The closures will include the Ferensway off and on slip roads.
The closures will be in place as follows. To minimise disruption, two of the planned closures have been scheduled to start at the later time of 10pm:
- Monday 13 November: Eastbound 8pm – 6am
- Tuesday 14 November: Eastbound 8pm – 6am
- Wednesday 15 November: East and Westbound 8pm – 6am
- Thursday 16 November: Eastbound 10pm – 6am
- Friday 17 November: Eastbound 10pm – 6am.
An additional contingency date of Tuesday 21 November, between 10pm and 6am, may also be used if any of the work needs to be rescheduled.

The new Mytongate junction is an important part of the overall Castle Street scheme. Once it’s complete, it will reduce queuing and delays, ease congestion by increasing capacity, and ensure journey times are more reliable.
We’re carrying out this work before Christmas to help minimise disruption. However, we recognise there will still be some delays to the travelling public, as well as disruption within the city centre itself.
We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s patience while we carry out these major improvements within Hull city centre.

Princess Dock Street - new layout
What work is taking place?
We’re altering the existing layout on Princes Dock Street. The changes being made are for the permanent layout as part of the A63 Castle Street improvement scheme.
What are the main changes?
- We are changing the one-way system on Whitefriargate to the opposite direction, (from Burton’s corner to Parliament Street) stopping the left turn from Whitefriargate to Princes Dock Street.
- Changing Princes Dock Street to one-way (northbound) and allowing traffic to turn right onto Whitefriargate, then left onto Parliament Street.
- This temporary change matches the permanent layout once the major scheme is complete.
- Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
- Access for cyclists in both directions will be retained.
- Existing vehicle restrictions remain in place. Pedestrian & Cycle Zone; Prohibition of motor traffic at all times except for loading, Midnight – 11AM & 4PM – Midnight.

A63 Castle Street – traffic re-alignment.
We’re progressing well with construction overall and are preparing to move into the next work area. To do this we’ll be moving the alignment of a section of the A63 between Ferensway and Queen Street. The traffic will be moved towards the south and the Marina, and there will be no change to the number of available lanes in each direction.
This will also involve the closure of the footpath next to the A63 between Princes Dock Street and Market Place.
Access to residential properties in this area will not be affected.
We aim to make these changes over the weekend of 28-31 July 2023.
How will this affect me?
The realignment of traffic on the A63 will not reduce capacity. You may notice that some signs and work areas have changed and moved, but there should be no overall impact on your journey.
For residents living near the new work area, some of our activities will be noisy; noise levels are monitored closely, and we will do all we can to carry out the noisiest work earlier in our shifts. We apologise in advance for any disturbance and appreciate your patience while we complete this major investment in Hull city centre.

A63 Castle Street Project - work to take place during the closures for Myton Swing Bridge
Progress continues on the A63 Castle Street Major Project
From 23rd June 2023, there will be major repair works being carried out on nearby Myton Swing Bridge. This involves a number of mid-week overnight and full weekend road closures. We'll use some of these closures to carry out accommodation works for A63 Castle Street, reducing the impact on residents and drivers.
We'll carry out the majority of this work during the daytime weekend closures.

A63 Castle Street Project - parking, footpath & access restrictions
A63 Castle Street improvement scheme – parking, footpath & access restrictions
We’re creating a new junction by lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction to create a split-level junction. This will ease congestion as well as improving safety and access to the port. We’re also making improvements to Myton swing bridge.
What are we doing?
In July 2023, the existing traffic from Princes Quay Bridge to Market Place junction will be moved south (towards the marina), onto newly constructed sections of the A63. This will allow new sections of the A63 to the north (eastbound) to be constructed as part of the second phase of works to this section of the scheme. This includes widening of the existing road, upgrades to the existing road and improvements to the footpaths.
Parking Restrictions
From Thursday 15 June 2023, traffic management will be installed to prevent parking along the eastbound carriageway, verge and footpath. In addition to existing notices, a sign will be erected to inform the public of parking restrictions.
Footpath & Access Restrictions
The public footpath along the Eastbound A63 will no longer be accessible from July 2023. This is a temporary closure to allow works on the A63 carriageway and improvements to the footpaths. Properties with access within the closure will be consulted separately.

Road closures - March 2023
Overnight closures in March
To help us carry out the central barrier replacement on Daltry Street flyover, piling work near Sewer Lane, repairs to Myton swing bridge and carriageway works throughout the scheme, we’ll need to have some road closures. Due to the proximity of the works to live traffic, these closures are needed to ensure that we keep both our staff and customers safe.
We’ll be closing the westbound carriageway between Roger Millward Way and Daltry Street and the eastbound carriageway between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way on the following dates:
Monday 20 March up to and including Friday 24 March, between 8pm and 6am each night.
Monday 27 March up to and including Friday 31 March, between 8pm and 6am each night.
The westbound carriageway will be closed from 11pm on Friday 31 March, due to Hull KR’s game against Leeds Rhinos.
Fully-signed diversions will be in place during the closures.
Thank you for your patience while we progress our major investment in Hull.

Planned overnight closures in both directions between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way between 8pm and 6am, are now cancelled as our contractors have completed this work four days ahead of schedule.

Overnight closures - A63 Castle Street project continues
We are lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction to create a new split-level junction. This will ease congestion as well as improving safety and access to the port.
The developments are part of the £355m A63 Castle Street scheme, creating better connections for Hull city centre. Engineers are also carrying out essential repairs to the landmark Myton swing bridge, which carries the A63 over the River Hull.
Closures
The westbound carriageway between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way will be closed for five nights from Wednesday 11 January until the morning of Monday 16 January. Closures will be in place between 8pm and 6am.
This is to allow resurfacing on Myton swing bridge and the replacement of expansion joints in the westbound carriageway. The joints help bridges move under the stresses and strains of traffic and during changes in temperature.
From Monday 16 January, the A63 will then be closed in both directions for five nights from 8pm to 6am between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way. This is to allow for testing around Daltry flyover ahead of barrier and lighting work starting this year. Ground stabilisation work will also be completed near the eastbound carriageway.
Fully-signed diversions will be in place during the closures.
Traffic switch
In November, we carried out the first of its traffic switches, moving traffic west of Commercial Road. This enabled work to progress on a new underpass wall on the northern side of the Mytongate junction.
The second part of the switch will move traffic east of Commercial Road to the south of the junction.
This will mean, from Saturday 28 January, the A63 will be closed in both directions between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way between 8pm and 6am. The closures will be in place each night until Friday 10 February.
Switching the traffic to the opposite side of the junction will enable the creation of the new underpass wall on the northern side.

Overnight closures on A63 through Hull for new underpass
Drivers in Hull city centre are reminded that weeknight closures will be in place on the A63 for three weeks from Monday (31 October) as a new underpass creating better connections in the city makes progress.
Work has been taking place to construct a new underpass since August, we are now preparing to start construction work on the northern side of the underpass.
To enable this, traffic travelling on the A63 Castle Street will be directed to the southern side of the road.
This will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, all traffic will be moved to the west of Commercial Road. This will involve moving barriers in the central reservation, installing additional surfacing and updating signage and road markings. It is expected to take around three weeks to complete.
Closures and diversions
This work will take place from Monday (31 October). Closures will be in place on the A63 in both directions between Daltry flyover and Roger Millward Way at the junction with Plimsoll Way. This runs from Monday to Friday between 8pm and 6am.
All side roads between the points of Daltry Street Interchange and Roger Millward Way roundabout will also be closed. A fully signed diversion will be in place via the A15, A164, A1079 and A1033 for eastbound traffic, and vice versa for westbound.
The second phase, which will switch traffic from the east of Commercial Road, allowing the A63 to run along the southern side of the roundabout, is due to start in January 2023.
On Wednesday 2 November work is due to begin on the Myton Swing Bridge maintenance scheme. As well as progressing the A63 Castle Street underpass, the closures are also being used on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 November to help prepare the site for the start of the bridge maintenance work.

Porter Street footbridge - now open
A new footbridge over the A63 in Hull and has officially opened to pedestrians and cyclists.
The Porter Street footbridge is a major step forward in our £355m scheme to improve safety and create better connections in Hull city centre.
The 37-metre emerald-green structure creates a new pedestrian route over the A63, connecting Porter Street on the north side of the major route to St James Street to the south.
The footbridge is an integral part of the overall A63 Castle Street project. The scheme will support Hull’s economic growth, improve journeys to and from the city centre, and help the nearby port to thrive.
Emma Hardy, MP for Hull West and Hessle and Cllr Mark Ieronimo were there to officially open the footbridge, assisted by children from Adelaide Primary School in Hull.

Following the opening of Porter Street footbridge, we are removing the temporary pedestrian crossing nearby.
Do do this work safely we need to close the road overnight for two nights - Monday 3 October and Tuesday 4 October.

A63 Castle Street improvement scheme – Bank holiday working
We’re creating a new junction by lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction to create a split-level junction. This will ease congestion as well as improving safety and access to the port.
We’re planning to work over the bank holiday weekend to allow us to stabilise the poor ground conditions so we can construct the underpass. We’ll be working between 8am and 6pm on Saturday 27, Sunday 28 and Monday 29 August in the red area highlighted in the below.We are not anticipating this work to be noisy, but we’ll continue to work closely with Hull City Council to monitor it and take action where necessary.

Overnight closures of A63 in Hull for ongoing Castle Street upgrade
Road users in Hull are advised local diversions and parking restrictions will be in place from next week as part of the ongoing A63 Castle Street improvement.
Both carriageways will be closed overnight between Daltry Street and Roger Millward Way on Monday 8 and Tuesday, 9 August to install new lighting columns around Porter Street Bridge.
This will be followed by overnight closures of the westbound carriageway to stabilise ground conditions ready for construction of a new underpass.
They take place from Monday to Friday during the week of 15 August, and Monday to Thursday in the week commencing Monday, 22 August.
All closures will be in place from 8pm to 6am.
Traffic will be diverted along the A1105, A1079 and A165 or vice versa.

Further update on overnight working - A63 Mytongate Junction
Our work to create a new junction by lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction continues. This will ease congestion as well as improving safety and access to the port.
We have further westbound overnight closures planned working Monday to Friday from Monday 20 June until Friday 1 July. We're working from 8pm until 6am through the old Trinity Burial ground and along the old A63 in front of Holiday Inn.
We will also need an eastbound closure Monday to Friday from Monday 27 June until Friday 1 July from 8pm until 6am.
This is to allow us to stabilise the poor ground conditions so we can construct the underpass. This work is also taking place during the day, but night working is required along this section for safety reasons, due to close proximity to the live traffic.

Better connections for Hull drivers as new A63 underpass develops
Work on a new underpass is moving forward, creating better connections for drivers in the city centre.
Significant progress has already been made and the next stage will see the installation of new wall panels in the 400m underpass, where east-west traffic will travel below north-south traffic at the current Hull Mytongate junction. New lighting will also be installed at Porter Street.
We have carried out deep excavation work to create the new 400m section of underpass. As well as forming the underpass walls, there has been extensive intricate piling work – the process of driving foundations through the ground to provide greater stability and strength to the structure.
In total, 200 wall panels are being installed in the underpass.
To ensure the next phase of work can be carried out safely, overnight closures will be in place on the A63 between Roger Millward Way and Daltry Street.
The westbound carriageway will be closed each night, from 8pm until 6am, on these dates:
- Tuesday 19 April - Friday 22 April
- Monday 25 April - Friday 29 April
- Tuesday 3 May and Wednesday 4 May
The eastbound carriageway will also be closed from 8pm until 6am on Tuesday 19 April.
Deep dry mixing work is also taking place overnight, every Monday to Friday night, between Porter Street and Murdoch’s Connection. This work is expected to be in progress until late July 2022.
Frances Oliver, Project Manager said: “We’re not anticipating this work to create significant noise disruption in the area. However, we will continue to monitor sound levels and take action where necessary."

Time-lapse of Porter Street bridge
The new bridge is a major step forward in National Highways’ £355m scheme to improve safety and create better connections in Hull city centre.

This extra footbridge, close to where major improvements are being carried out to the Mytongate Junction, is an integral part of overall A63 Castle Street major project.

Ramps and steps have been installed on the northern side and in the next few weeks will be put in to place on the southern side.
The bridge is expected to open to pedestrians and cyclists early this summer.

We’re planning to create a new junction by lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction. Ferensway and Commercial Road would cross the A63 creating a split-level junction. Between Princes Dock Street and Market Place we propose to widen the eastbound carriageway to three lanes. We also plan to construct a new bridge over the A63 at Porter Street. These improvements will improve access to the port, congestion, safety and connections between the city centre and the tourist and recreational facilities.

Mytongate junction restricts the flow of traffic along the A63, causing congestion. It is used by approximately 47,000 vehicles each day and delays at peak times can cause problems for people and businesses. The A63 acts as a barrier between the city centre to the north and the retail and dock areas to the south. We need to create better connections between the two areas.

To create the new underpass and junction upgrade at Mytongate we need to change the way the roundabout is used.
This will allow us to move traffic on the A63 so we can work more during the day and minimise disruption for residents and will be in place until the underpass has been built.
Below you will find a series of maps, in alphabetical order, which will show you how you can access businesses around the junction.
Drivers also can't turn right from all directions (from A63 eastbound and westbound, Ferensway and Commercial Road).
Drivers travelling along Ferensway and Commercial Road also can't go straight on.
The diversions at the junction are expected to add up to ten minutes to journeys so please allow extra time for your journey. We've kept them to our network as much as possible to avoid increasing traffic on the local roads.
Bonus Arena, Princes Quay shopping centre
Access to Myton Street from the A63 has been closed. To access Bonus Arena, Princes Quay shopping centre and other businesses in this area please use Ferensway, Osborne Street and Waterhouse Lane.
The map below also shows how to access the venues if travelling westbound and if you miss the turning eastbound.
Please remember that Myton Street is one way around the arena.
Holiday Inn, Kingston Retail Park, Nuffield Health, Whittington and Cat pub
To access the businesses in the Commercial Road, Kingston Street, English Street and Lister Road areas please leave the A63 at Daltry flyover if travelling eastbound following the black solid square.
If travelling from the north or west please follow the solid circle on the yellow and black signs.

We’ve recently closed several pedestrian crossings across the A63 to allow us to build an underpass. People are advised to use these routes and stay safe rather than taking a chance on crossing elsewhere. You can also provide feedback on the route by visiting our feedback form.
Cyclists currently are prohibited from using the A63 while work is ongoing along the route. However we’d encourage cyclists to use the current cycle/footpath from Daltry Street flyover and exit at Porter Street to access one of the existing routes in place on Hull City Council’s network, see map here for reference: https://www.travelhull.co.uk/bike/cycle-map If travelling from the opposite side please refer to the map on the closest routes.

Our Castle Street principal contractor Balfour Beatty was delighted to support the Humber STEM event at Sewell Group Craven Park on 1 July.
The event was attended by 600 primary school children and 30 businesses.
More than 150 pupils visited Balfour's activity which was to build the tallest and strongest structure.
