The challenges faced by young people

If you work with young people you’ll understand some of the difficulties they’ve experienced over recent months. This extensive period of disruption has caused uncertainty.

Young people are often more resilient than they are given credit for. Some will re-integrate out of lockdown and back into education easily, but others will need more support to build their resilience to cope with the constant changes and uncertainty. They may need reassurance and support, as they may experience heightened levels of fear and anxiety.

There could be lots of mixed emotions/relief at being able to see their friends again and pick up their academic path. But also perhaps frustration at exam results, anxiety after such a long time out of education, and worry at the continuing uncertainty of the pandemic.

As teaching staff, you may also be concerned about the school or college environment you have returned to, and the uncertainties for you. It is more important than ever that your own wellbeing is looked after, and you are given the necessary tools and resources to create a supportive environment for yourself, your colleagues and young people.

How we can help

At Mental Health UK, we want to support you during this period and build on your existing skills. We have developed a calendar of free teaching staff training.

The course is based on our young people’s programme Bloom, which supports the mental health and resilience of 14-18-year-olds. Delivered in schools and colleges across the UK, Bloom equips young people aged 14–18 with the tools and knowledge to maintain their mental health through life’s transitions, both now and in the future.

After the training, you will receive the Bloom resources so they can facilitate the resilience sessions in the classroom. The Mental Health UK team will also be available to support you with the delivery of the programme.

The online sessions complement the original 8-week co-delivery workshops delivered face-to-face in classrooms. Therefore we also encourage you to consider taking part in the full Bloom programme, where our training associates will co-deliver the sessions with you in your school or college.

What is the free resilience training?

This video provides a quick overview of the training course. The content is evidence-based and centred around our existing young people’s resilience programme, Bloom, which we have already trained over 100 teachers in and delivered to 3,000 young people across the UK.

There are two different types of training available:

  • One 3-hour session providing you with full training on the programme which will prepare you to deliver in your school or college
  • Three 1-hour workshops which will prepare you to deliver one workshop in your school or college

Our free sessions have limited tickets which can become full quickly. We know that there are sometimes disruptions to plans last-minute, and you may not be able to make the session you signed up for. If this is the case, even if it is very close to the event start time, we ask that you cancel your ticket through your Zoom registration email. Cancelling your ticket allows spaces for other teaching staff to book a place and means an overall better experience for the teaching staff who can attend.

We facilitate these sessions through Zoom. To have the best experience, try downloading the Zoom app to your device. If this is not possible or does not work well with your device, try using the browser. Previous delegates have noted that Firefox or Google Chrome work well, but Internet Explorer seems to have audio issues.
