Simpson Studios

This site showcases some of the work of husband and wife photographers Michaela & Richard Simpson. Two photographers, each with their own very distinctive style.

Having worked all over the UK and beyond, they are currently based in their North Tyneside studio and home. Enjoy having a look at their collective work.

Many of the images are available to licence through Getty Images “the world’s foremost visual experts”.

Although primarily a documentary and fine art photographer, with an extensive publication and exhibition history, I have also directed broadcast documentaries (as R F Simpson) and written fiction (as J J Salkeld).

The works featured here are from historic and ongoing projects, exploring everything from issues of national identity (The Debatable Lands) and global warming (SEA LEVEL) to an enduring interest in change and mutability (mono no aware).

The more recent work tends to be more introspective, featuring repeated metaphorical visual themes - such as the decaying remains of wartime sea defences - while work from earlier decades is more often in the documentary tradition, for example the Hound Trailing series from c1990. We have grouped work into a number of broad thematic categories.

For over ten years I have been a full time commercial photographer, a large part of that covering weddings and events UK wide. A career highlight was winning PR photographer of the year in 2015. I still enjoy taking portraits, especially my Olympus OM1 film cameras.

More recently a change of lifestyle and move to North Tyneside has seen me concentrate more on my fine art work. The welcome change of pace has allowed me to create more personal work that I enjoy and get a tremendous amount of pleasure from. A member of the RPS (Royal Photographic Society), I collaborate with other creatives on ongoing projects.

My most recent project From the Sea to the Land has taken my photography on what now seems an obvious journey, capturing the beautiful Northumberland coast.
