West Coast Main Line improvements

We are carrying out major projects between Saturday 4 and Monday 6 May to improve the railway for passengers and freight.

Check before you travel ahead of important railway upgrades over the early May bank holiday.

What work is taking place?

The work includes:

  • Upgrading track and switches and crossings at Wembley, Ledburn Junction and Stafford.
  • Important track improvement work will take place between Coventry and Birmingham New Street.
  • Upgrading the track with new switches and crossings, and improving the drainage in and around Crewe station.
  • Engineers are also carrying out important maintenance in Carlisle.

How will this work affect me?

The railway will be closed between London Euston and Milton Keynes on Sunday 5 May. If you are travelling to or from Euston on Sunday 5 May you are advised to travel via Kings Cross and get a bus replacement service to or from Milton Keynes. Trains will start and terminate at Milton Keynes Central, where there will be rail replacement services to and from Bedford.

In the Midlands, long distance trains will be diverted on alternative routes and rail replacement buses will be in operation.

Anyone planning to use the West Coast Mainline is advised to plan ahead by visiting National Rail.
