The role of any landscape architect extends beyond adding elements to a space 🌿 It involves understanding when to exercise moderation, preserve existing features, and guide decisions to align the site design with both the comprehensive vision of the project and the environment in which it lives. SMMA's recent project at Westborough's Otis St properties exemplifies this balance. Located on a sprawling site with numerous design possibilities, SMMA carefully planned development boundaries, considering preservation of mature trees and existing site features, buffers, zoning, and community access. Opting for mostly native species, the planting plan is an extension of the natural landscape beyond. Crafting an outdoor respite for employees, a multi-functional patio was designed with strategic plantings and grading, fostering a cozy, secure atmosphere. "The native plantings are not just beautiful, they also foster an active seed bank, increasing the likelihood of native species repopulating the woodland edge and understory." - Meghan Collins, SMMA Landscape Designer #LAM2024 #LandscapeArchitecture #Preservation #NativePlanting 📸 Raj Das

SMMA stands behind our talented Interior Designers in their pursuit of professional licensure in Massachusetts. This month, a few of our interior designers joined forces with their colleagues and peers to show their support of Bill S.2408, “An Act Relative to Advancing the Profession of Commercial Interior Design,” in an effort to achieve licensure and recognition for their qualifications. This will be the sixth year the interior design community has had a bill before the legislature. As we strive to push this over the finish line, we encourage your action! By using the tool provided in the link below, you can easily locate your MA legislator and email them to request their support for the bill. Together, we can help advance the profession of Interior Designers in Massachusetts 👏 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eDJhQuG Photo credit: IIDA New England #BillS2408 #InteriorDesign #Licensure

SMMA is pleased to be working alongside Perkins&Will and Consigli Construction Co., Inc. on this exciting project for the Town of Stoneham! We are proud to continue playing a role in the net zero movement for Massachusetts Schools. 🌎 #EarthMonth #NetZero #FutureThinking
Stoneham High School in Massachusetts is setting a high standard for sustainability among large high schools nationwide. In line with the town’s climate goals, the school aims for zero on-site fossil fuel use and zero net energy, generating 109% of its energy demand on-site. Through the use of carbon-conscious materials, with longevity and optimization at the forefront, this approach ensures the building's endurance, adaptability, and rejuvenation over time. Located next to one of the country’s largest conservation trusts, the school’s net-positive design serves as an opportunity to embed itself within its rich history, while driving innovation and future-forward growth for the town of Stoneham. It’s not every day you see a building designed atop an existing building. Yet that is precisely the story for Hood Park’s latest addition in Charlestown. Expressive and dynamic in design, the LEED Gold certified, six-story tower marks another milestone for SMMA’s Hood Park Master Plan. In collaboration with numerous teams and extensive pre-planning efforts, many of the challenges that went into the design are unseen, hidden below the ground in the building’s foundations, ensuring the success of the unique vertical expansion. 🔗 Learn more about Hood Park’s transformation into a bustling, mixed-use destination here: https://lnkd.in/eUrG_f_P Thank you to our team members: Hood Park Charlestown Newmark Lincoln Property Company Lee Kennedy Co., Inc. #HoodPark #Charlestown #Boston #BostonArchitecture #MasterPlan

The new state-of-the-art headquarters for Entrada Therapeutics in Boston’s Seaport District foregoes the typical visual barrier between lab and office. Bursting with natural light, warm interiors, historic character, and inviting collaboration spaces, Entrada’s new digs favor a connected workplace maximizing dialogue and teamwork. Using large transparent partitions and streamlined wayfinding throughout the two-floor design, SMMA embraced the long, narrow floor plan of a World War 1-era army storehouse to optimize the employee experience. “People are not just coming to work,” says Natarajan Sethuraman, PhD, Entrada’s Chief Scientific Officer. “They are here to connect, learn more about their scientific area of interest, and most importantly, develop new medicines for patients.” 🔗 Click the link below to learn more and tour the space. As we approach the end of Women’s History Month, we wanted to spotlight our team from numerous disciplines at SMMA who attended this year's Women’s Leadership Forum in Boston hosted by New Balance and The Ad Club. Together with over 600 attendees, we listened to inspiring voices from environmental and social justice activist Leah Thomas, congressional policy and political leader Grisella Martinez, and Olympic athlete, Elle Purrier St Pierre, among others. Our team left with a deeper sense of community and empowerment, organizing plans for future projects and ongoing internal discussions. “Hopefully, we keep showing up over and over and over again. So much of life is just about showing up. Remember who you are. We all have something to offer this world.” - Grisella Martinez. 🙌✨ #WomensHistoryMonth #WomeninDesign #Boston #Empowerment
