The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) International Forum will bring together policymakers, representatives from GIAHS sites, country delegates, international experts and FAO staff as well as relevant international organizations to discuss and exchange the experiences gained and lessons learned through GIAHS application, implementation of action plans for dynamic conservation and to consider future perspectives of the GIAHS Programme.
The event will also include an award ceremony for newly designated GIAHS sites proposed in 2016, in countries such as China, Japan, Egypt, Korea, Mexico, Spain (first site in Europe), and Sri Lanka have been newly endorsed as GIAHS.
The forum will also serve as a moment to take stock of the experiences in dynamic conservation of the 45 sites now present in 19 countries around the world. Many of them have undertaken significant follow-up activities and accumulated experiences of for conservation, adaptive management and development of the sites. It is time to assess lessons learnt and share experiences among GIAHS sites as well as other similar agricultural approaches.
