In the second report in our “Fuel for thought” alternative fuels series we evaluate ammonia.

We will explore the current state of ammonia as a clean fuel, including its safety considerations, drivers for adoption, production and supply chain, and technology readiness. We will also examine the potential implications of widespread adoption of ammonia as a clean fuel and its role in achieving a sustainable future.

The report highlights all the general safety and toxicity issues associated with using ammonia, suggesting specific considerations that need to be kept in mind while using ammonia as a fuel. The quality of ammonia bunkers is also touched upon.

Other drivers for the adoption of ammonia as a fuel are also covered including regulations, lifecycle analysis, ship operator demand and interest, volume projections and techno-economic drivers.
