Typically, the first birth of any year is a big deal. For the conservation partnership between Audubon Nature Institute and San Diego Zoo Global, the initial newborn of 2018 was really big!
A 6-foot-tall male reticulated giraffe calf (a typical height for a newborn) weighed in at an impressive 150 pounds when he arrived on the morning of January 9 at the West Bank campus of the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center in Lower Coast Algiers.
The average labor for a giraffe is one to two hours. Tumaini, the mother, started giving birth at 6:30 a.m., but the calf didn't make his grand entrance until four hours later.
"It was longer than expected but everything was progressing normally, just slower, so we just watched,'' said Michelle Hatwood, Curator of the Species Survival Center. "Most giraffe do not need any assistance; we would have intervened only if absolutely necessary.''
Hatwood and her staff had known for months that a calf was on the way, but a giraffe's 14- to 16-month gestation period can make it tough to pinpoint a likely delivery date.
Because many animals give birth in the middle of the night, Hatwood added that it was a rare treat for animal staff to witness the breathtaking event.
"Giraffe give birth standing up and the calf falls about six feet to the ground,'' she said. The fall not only breaks the umbilicus, it also gives the calf a jolt to start breathing and moving - kind of like when a doctor spanks a human baby after being born.''
Animal care staff describe Tumaini as "very cautious and shy,'' prompting staff to remain very quiet during her labor.
Erica Sherrow, a member of the animal care team who was present for the birth, described the moment as an exhilarating experience.
"When the calf was born, his legs were awkwardly tangled over his head and we thought we might have to help get his lanky legs situated,'' Sherrow said. "But he figured it out himself and was standing in no time.''
Traffic Advisory: Temporary closure and lane reduction on Bourbon Street
NEW ORLEANS - Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 6 a.m., the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works' construction contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC, will temporarily close the 600 and 700 blocks of Bourbon Street and the intersection of Toulouse and Bourbon Streets to through traffic.
The closure will be in effect on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The closure will allow crews to perform exploratory work in preparation of Phase II of the French Quarter Infrastructure Improvement Project.
When the roadway re-opens to vehicular traffic on the 600 and 700 blocks of Bourbon Street on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m., drivers can expect traffic to be reduced to one lane as well as intermittent closures.
Public safety is our top priority; residents and commuters are reminded to use caution when driving, bicycling and walking near this construction site. Signage and traffic control measures such as barrels and fencing are onsite to direct drivers and pedestrians.
The multi-million dollar French Quarter Infrastructure Improvement Project calls for removing and replacing existing water and drainage lines, repairing the sewer line, repaving the roadway in concrete, installing new sidewalks when necessary and installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections.

Renowned jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan created Jazz Pilates which is set to the recorded music of major jazz composers like John Coltrane, Kidd Jordan, and Kent Jordan. Stephanie Jordan developed her Jazz Pilates technique after receiving her certification from Wise Body Pilates. Jazz Pilates integrates traditional Pilates and dance movements with jazz to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection. It is a muscle lengthening and strengthening program designed to improve balance and transform the body so that it functions at optimal capacity.
Jordan believes that the whole fitness movement is too focused on "Buy a membership, join a spa, purchase this equipment and you'll be beautiful." Jazz Pilates participants are able to use what they were born with-their bodies. The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center provides the perfect venue to allow French Market District visitors to create movements that is beneficial to both physical and mental health-in a mere 45 - minutes to an hour. Participants are introduced to the works of major jazz composers and performers while developing a lifelong physical fitness and emotional wellness through arts and fitness integration. With all of the distractions in the world, the human body naturally retains the basic urge to create movement, to physically "get a lot of stuff out." Jazz Pilates is designed to improve balance and transform the body so patrons may function at optimal capacity while working, playing, or just living life to the fullest.
Please bring your own fitness mat and arrive at least 10 minutes before class begins.
