Typically, the first birth of any year is a big deal. For the conservation partnership between Audubon Nature Institute and San Diego Zoo Global, the initial newborn of 2018 was really big!
A 6-foot-tall male reticulated giraffe calf (a typical height for a newborn) weighed in at an impressive 150 pounds when he arrived on the morning of January 9 at the West Bank campus of the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center in Lower Coast Algiers.
The average labor for a giraffe is one to two hours. Tumaini, the mother, started giving birth at 6:30 a.m., but the calf didn't make his grand entrance until four hours later.
"It was longer than expected but everything was progressing normally, just slower, so we just watched,'' said Michelle Hatwood, Curator of the Species Survival Center. "Most giraffe do not need any assistance; we would have intervened only if absolutely necessary.''
Hatwood and her staff had known for months that a calf was on the way, but a giraffe's 14- to 16-month gestation period can make it tough to pinpoint a likely delivery date.
Because many animals give birth in the middle of the night, Hatwood added that it was a rare treat for animal staff to witness the breathtaking event.
"Giraffe give birth standing up and the calf falls about six feet to the ground,'' she said. The fall not only breaks the umbilicus, it also gives the calf a jolt to start breathing and moving - kind of like when a doctor spanks a human baby after being born.''
Animal care staff describe Tumaini as "very cautious and shy,'' prompting staff to remain very quiet during her labor.
Erica Sherrow, a member of the animal care team who was present for the birth, described the moment as an exhilarating experience.
"When the calf was born, his legs were awkwardly tangled over his head and we thought we might have to help get his lanky legs situated,'' Sherrow said. "But he figured it out himself and was standing in no time.''

Traffic Advisory: Temporary closure and lane reduction on Bourbon Street

NEW ORLEANS - Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 6 a.m., the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works' construction contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC, will temporarily close the 600 and 700 blocks of Bourbon Street and the intersection of Toulouse and Bourbon Streets to through traffic.

The closure will be in effect on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The closure will allow crews to perform exploratory work in preparation of Phase II of the French Quarter Infrastructure Improvement Project.

When the roadway re-opens to vehicular traffic on the 600 and 700 blocks of Bourbon Street on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m., drivers can expect traffic to be reduced to one lane as well as intermittent closures.

Public safety is our top priority; residents and commuters are reminded to use caution when driving, bicycling and walking near this construction site. Signage and traffic control measures such as barrels and fencing are onsite to direct drivers and pedestrians.

The multi-million dollar French Quarter Infrastructure Improvement Project calls for removing and replacing existing water and drainage lines, repairing the sewer line, repaving the roadway in concrete, installing new sidewalks when necessary and installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections.

A full description of the project scope is available at: http://roadwork.nola.gov/bourbon/

"Jazz Pilates with Stephanie Jordan"
New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint
400 Esplanade Ave New Orleans, LA 70116

Tuesday, January 23, 2018
4:00 PM 5:00 PM

Renowned jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan created Jazz Pilates which is set to the recorded music of major jazz composers like John Coltrane, Kidd Jordan, and Kent Jordan. Stephanie Jordan developed her Jazz Pilates technique after receiving her certification from Wise Body Pilates.  Jazz Pilates integrates traditional Pilates and dance movements with jazz to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection.  It is a muscle lengthening and strengthening program designed to improve balance and transform the body so that it functions at optimal capacity.

Jordan believes that the whole fitness movement is too focused on "Buy a membership, join a spa, purchase this equipment and you'll be beautiful." Jazz Pilates participants are able to use what they were born with-their bodies. The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center provides the perfect venue to allow French Market District visitors to create movements that is beneficial to both physical and mental health-in a mere 45 - minutes to an hour. Participants are introduced to the works of major jazz composers and performers while developing a lifelong physical fitness and emotional wellness through arts and fitness integration.
With all of the distractions in the world, the human body naturally retains the basic urge to create movement, to physically "get a lot of stuff out." Jazz Pilates is designed to improve balance and transform the body so patrons may function at optimal capacity while working, playing, or just living life to the fullest.

Please bring your own fitness mat and arrive at least 10 minutes before class begins.

The Veneto, From Delicious Sparkling to Amazing Amarone w/Antonio Molesini , Tuesday January 23rd, 6-7:30pm - From refreshing sparkling wine to food-friendly whites, delicious rose' and rich, aromatic reds, the Veneto is a diverse, exciting and extremely beautiful wine region. Having been to the region twice in the past 6 months, I'm more infatuated than ever with the people, wine, food and culture of this corner of Northern Italy - and am in fact scheduling another trip this summer with my good friend Antonio Molesini. While Antonio was born in Tuscany, his family roots are in the Veneto so we are both excited to share our love of region with you in this seated tasting. We'll touch on everything from Prosecco to Soave, Chiaretto to Amarone and to make it even more exciting, Casey Foote will pair and present cheeses from northern Italy to taste with the wines. Don't miss this one - 6 wines, great cheese and a whole lot of fun! $45 , make your reservations here:  Veneto

Wednesday Night Flights -  No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you take a seat, we come to you and pour our themed flight tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. Resident cheesemonger Casey Foote offers a specially selected cheese plate to pair with the wines that is available for purchase.  Learn a little, drink a little, bring a friend or two with you to chat about the wines and cheeses and to catch up on life.  The flights range from $15 to $25 and reservations are highly recommended as we cannot always guarantee walk-ins. All wines are available for purchase to drink at Swirl or you can take them to go.
Event Environment - Social but with more emphasis on terroir, grape varieties, production methods, food pairings.  Casey Foote adds some regional cheese education into the mix as well. Many people make an evening of it and order food from 1000 Figs to be served at your table or move to one of our great neighborhood restaurants for a bite afterward.
Upcoming - Wednesday, January 24 with Erin & Chelsea pouring a Spanish Wine Primer, 5:30 to 7:30PM - see information below or go to
Spanish Wine Primer for details.

Friday Free For All's- definitely our most popular event night!  Joined by some of our favorite wine reps, each and every Friday, we pour samples of 4-5 wines for free, usually with some sort of theme.  The wines vary in price point from $12 to $30 depending on the selection for the night, and as you would think, free wine draws a crowd so be prepared to wait in line to get your samples.  The wine rep will give you a quick sound bite on the wines you are tasting and is available for more in-depth questions should you so desire. All wines are available for purchase to drink at Swirl or you can take them to go.
Event Environment - Fun, social and festive with lots of neighborhood folks and people stopping by before dinner at one of our fine restaurants.  Free and no reservations required!
Upcoming - Friday, January 26 with Erik Christensen and wines from Europe, 6-8pm

Special Event - The Somm's Pick An Evening of Wine with Master Sommelier Thomas Price There are only 236 of them in the world and only 149 in the Americas. The title of Master Sommelier, as you have seen in the documentary SOMM, is considered by many to be the hardest to achieve in almost any field. Those who have passed it have spent years working toward the goal, and have joined an elite group that is considered the think tank and knowledge base of the wine industry.  Join us for this special night of wine education, entertainment, and inspiration with Thomas Price, Master Sommelier. Mr. Price was one of four people to pass his Master Sommelier exam in 2012 while working at the Metropolitan Grill in Seattle. Since then he has become the National Director of Wine Education for Jackson Family Wines, for whom he provides deep wine education and training services around the country. The night will start with introductions and Mr. Price telling us his background and stories leading up to his successful passing of the test (while tasting great wines of course). Then we will move into a "Taste Like a Master" mini-seminar where Mr. Price will step us through Sommelier level tips and tricks when it comes to wine understanding. This seminar will be an eye opener for all!  This will be an incredible night with a very special guest, featuring outstanding wines from the Jackson Family Wines portfolio. I hope you can make it! It is $25 to attend the event, that will include a tasting 4 wines plus a free Reidel crystal wine glass that is yours to keep. The wines will be available for purchase after the event. ABOUT THIS CLASS
BEGINNER ADULT TAP is ideal for the absolute beginner, tap veteran, or anyone looking to begin or continue their training and journey into the art of tap dancing in fun and relaxed environment! The class emphasizes core tap fundamentals, proper technique, and learning tap vocabulary.
In a moderately paced class, students will learn to rhythmically shift weight and dance in time, proper placement and weight distribution in their tap shoes, how to accurately articulate all parts of the foot, and of course the ABCs of tap vocabulary, i.e. "the steps." Once we establish "The Basics," we learn to build on them through basic time steps, progressions, exercises and combinations. Dancers will also develop an appreciation and understanding of basic music theory, as they will experience first hand the deep and imperative connection between tap dancing and music.
REQUIREMENTS
No prior experience is required. If you have never taken a tap dance class, or have had fewer than six months of classes, this is the class for you. This is a high-energy class and an engaging workout for the mind and body! Please wear tap shoes and comfortable clothing for moving with ankle visibility.
NOTE
A minimum number of students must enroll in this class for it to "make". If fewer students enroll than are necessary, the class will be cancelled and full refunds will be issued. If we have to cancel the class, we'll make every effort to notify students at least one week before the first class meeting.
Also note that...
  • Students must register for the full seven-week session.
  • Drop-ins/pay-by-the-class will not be permitted.

Well, that's it for this New Year. I'm hoping for a terrific year, lots of money, great gigs, fame and adulation, and some clarification of the meaning of existence. And a clear set of lungs...

Sunchoke Pizza

Ingredients
  • 1 sunchoke
  • 1 tablespoon roughly chopped fresh rosemary
  • Large pinch or two shredded Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • 2 to 3 whole leaves lacinato kale, stems trimmed
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • Salt
  • One 12- to 13-ounce ball your favorite pizza dough
  • All-purpose flour, for dusting
  • Small handful shredded whole-milk mozzarella (1/2 to 3/4 cup)
  • Small handful shredded fontina Val d'Aosta cheese (1/2 to 3/4 cup)
  • Creme fraiche or thinned down sour cream, for drizzling
Directions
Special equipment: pizza peel, mandoline slicer
Heat your oven as high as it will go (500 to 600 degrees F) with a pizza stone set on the bottom floor for 30 minutes before cooking the pizza.
Slice the sunchoke as thinly as possible with a mandolin into a bowl. (You should get enough pieces to make a thin layer that covers the whole pie.) Toss together the rosemary, Parmigiano-Reggiano, kale, a generous dash of olive oil and a generous pinch of salt, coating everything evenly and massaging the kale to soften it up. Taste for salt and adjust if necessary.
Stretch out the dough into a 12-inch round, first pinching a hearty edge for the crust, then gently stretching to reach 12 inches. Generously flour a pizza peel and lay down the round. Quickly lay down the mozzarella, then an even layer of the sunchokes, followed by the kale. The kale should not cover the pie evenly like the sunchokes, but add an accent of color and crunchiness. Top the pie with the fontina and slide onto the pizza stone.
Cook until the pie is evenly browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Pull the pie onto a flat metal pie pan or the underside of a baking sheet so it's easy to slide off onto a cutting board. Cut the pie into 6 even pieces and drizzle with creme fraiche.

Nayo Jones (pronounced Nīyō) was born in Chicago, Illinois into a family of musicians and destined to be in show business. Her parents noticed her musical gift at an early age. As an accomplished jazz musician and music educator, her father William "Doc" Jones groomed and nurtured her natural ability from the very beginning. Thanks to her father's love of jazz, Ms. Jones grew up listening to standards that proved to be a solid foundation and would later become a signature in her own show. Though she doesn't play much any more, Nayo Jones is a classically trained flutist. She'd go on to compete on a state level throughout high school on into her college years. Growing up Nayo Jones would even join her dad on stage to play with him and his jazz band. Additionally, at her mother's insistence, Jones sang in the gospel choir at church but would never take solos since she was and still is ironically very shy.

A graduate of Spelman College, in Atlanta, Georgia, Nayo Jones though still in love with music focused her life on the corporate world not realizing music was still her in destiny. On a whim, Nayo Jones found herself back on her musical journey. No longer able to ignore her calling, Ms. Jones sang for an event to help her dad raise funds benefiting his non-profit music organization in Phoenix, Arizona. The audience received Ms. Jones with joy and jubilation; stage fright aside, she enjoyed singing for them as much as they loved having her. Ms. Jones didn't realize it then but that day was the beginning of her-story. To date, Nayo Jones wows her audiences (large and small) and consistently gains loyal fans with her sultry voice and her obvious passion for every note she sings. Nayo Jones debuted at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2012 where she has appeared annually since then. Ms. Jones has opened for such greats as Chris Botti, Otis & the Temptations, The Whispers & Lakeside. In addition to her own show, Ms. Jones currently tours alongside New Orleans' iconic jazz trumpeter, Kermit Ruffins. Though still a babe in the music industry she already has the savvy of some of the most classic female artists and has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. Ms. Jones has an extraordinary ability to capture her audience and keep them in a trance every time she hits the stage. Nayo Jones continues to cherish those classic tunes she heard growing up and is committed to bringing back the "authenticity of music" each time she performs. Her fans have compared her to the likes of Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack and even Billy Holiday as she belts out tunes from jazz standards to adult R&B.

Nayo Jones is featured on the latest album release by Kermit Ruffins, #imsoneworleans. Her body of work also includes her first original album "My Name is Nayo Jones", a "Holiday Collection" and her EP simply titled "Nayo". Jones is currently in the studio working on her first Jazz album. Stay tuned...

Women in Wine: Seminar with Winemaker Kristina Shideler of Arrowood
Wed, Jan 24 from 6:30pm - 8pm (Central)
  • 21+
Join us for the first in a series dedicated to Women throughout the Wine Business. This Seminar will focus on the process of winemaking in Sonoma. The follwing wines will be included from Arrowood Vineyards, let by Winemaker, Kristina Shideler.
  • Arrowood Vineyards, Chardonnay 2013
  • Arrowood Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon Estates 2014
  • Arrowood Vineyards, Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
  • More will be added as it becomes available before the event.
WinemakerKRISTINA SHIDELER
It didn't take long for Kristina Shideler to discover the allure of wine and the integral role it plays in cultures around the world. After traveling throughout Western Europe she developed a love of wine, particularly for Barolo and Bordeaux blends.
Born in San Diego and raised in Missouri, Kristina attended University of Missouri where she double-majored in Biochemistry and Agricultural Economics. In 2007, she interned with a Missouri winemaker, working her way from the vineyards and bottling line to the cellar. Kristina remembers the invaluable wisdom she recieved, "Taste everything you can get your hands on. Never stop learning and never get bored."
Following harvest stints in New Zealand, Kristina enrolled at the University of California Davis Viticulture and Enology Masters of Science program in 2009, specializing in viticulture coursework.
Kristina's next adventure took her to the steep vineyards of Neipoort Vinhos in Portugal's Douro Valley. She became fascinated by the unique complexities of mountain vineyards and studied how the dramatic interplay between climate and elevation as well as varying soil types are critical to making high quality wine. Kristina's subsequent experiences at Bodega Caelum in Mendoza, Argentina as well as Verite and Stonestreet in Sonoma County, California, cemented her desire to produce artisan Bordeaux wines reflecting the terroir of truly remarkable vineyard sites.
Kristina joined Arrowood Winery in 2015 as Winemaker. She works closely with the cellar and vineyard team to make wines of extraordinary balance, complexity, and beauty. Kristina is passionate about crafting distinctive Cabernet Sauvignons from Sonoma's diverse AVAs and vineyards along the western ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains.
In her spare time, Kristina enjoys running, cooking, and hosting food and wine pairing dinners. She also continues to travel the world to experience as many cultures and wines as possible and has recently focused her attention on exploring South America.

Have you ever asked yourself how  Tabasco's famous hot sauce came to be? Well, you won't get the answer here, but you'll laugh yourself silly with this delightful comic operetta. For our 75th Anniversary and  New Orleans' Tricentennial, we celebrate this classically spicy sauce as international conductor  Paul Mauffray brings his edition of  George Whitefield Chadwick's delightful score to life.
This chamber series jewel is the rarity of the season, with a magically delicious libretto and a rollicking score that includes full orchestra and chorus. Come enjoy this wonderful historic revival at Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré in the heart of the French Quarter. Learn the mystery of Tabasco, and you'll never eat bland food again! Learn more about the history of the Burlesque Opera of Tabasco.
Tickets are available for sale through the New Orleans Opera. You can purchase them online at the link above or by calling their box office at 504-529-3000.

Local Historian and Lecturer John Magill Discusses

The Incomparable Magazine Street

METAIRIE, LA - John Magill, a retired curator at The Historic New Orleans Collection, discusses his new book, The Incomparable Magazine Street, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public.

The Incomparable Magazine Street traces the history and culture of the road that curves between St. Charles Avenue and the river. The once-unassuming thoroughfare has become the heart of a dynamic shopping and dining district.

Magazine Street has undergone many changes during its long history. From an overlooked district of mostly unassuming residences and businesses, it has evolved into a dynamic and attractive business thoroughfare. It is also one of the most important dining and drinking streets in town. Yet even with the transformation the street has seen, Magill contends that the soul of Magazine retains its residential charm.

John Magill retired in 2016 as senior curator with The Historic New Orleans Collection after more than 30 years. A nationally known urban historian and New Orleans expert, he has lectured and written on topics ranging from Carnival to catastrophes. He has penned articles for New Orleans Magazine, Louisiana Cultural Vistas, and The Historic New Orleans Collection Quarterly. He contributed to Charting Louisiana: 500 Years of Maps and is the coauthor of Canal Street: New Orleans' Great Wide Way and Christmas in New Orleans. Magill has been honored by the Press Club of New Orleans, the Gulf South Historical Association, and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.

For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at 504-889-8143 or  wcsmith@jefferson.lib.la.us.

Author Event!

Sydney Bellard Discusses A Cajun in France

METAIRIE, LA -Sydney P. Bellard discusses his new book, A Cajun in France: Journeys to Assimilation at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

The talk and book signing occurs as part of the monthly meeting of the Jefferson Parish Historical Society. It is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

Sidney "Pierre" Bellard's first language is Cajun French, and he was the first in his family to be a high school and college graduate. His Cajun parents spoke only broken English and could only write their names. Their ancestors had been in America well before there was a United States or the state of Louisiana. While most subsequent immigrants to America achieved assimilation within two generations, Bellard's paternal family line, due to isolation and a sharecropper lifestyle, took generations before he achieved assimilation in the 1960s.

Bellard went on to assimilate in three different cultures where he encountered language barriers, lack of family educational values, poverty, discrimination and the chains of insecurity. Eventually, he developed two major drives that were antithetical to each other - two drives he did not become fully aware of until the writing of this book. The first was to master the English language and the second was to achieve literacy in standard French.

Except for Native Americans, everyone in the New World is an immigrant or descendant of immigrants. Bellard says it is his desire that readers become more aware of their heritage and respect the difficult transitions their ancestors endured to achieve the American dream and make their lives, as they know it, possible. Also, the reader is invited to discover France and its people through the author's experiences and impressions - experiences that have enriched his life immeasurably.

Sidney P. Bellard is a retired educator whose career included teaching European history, civics, English, geography, sociology, French, and adult literacy. Additionally, he was a high school vice principal and counselor in a private school and director of adult education programs in the public school sector. He has chaired state and national conventions and made state and national presentations on the topics of adult literacy and convention planning. He has also served on state and national literacy boards of directors.

National Irish Coffee Day - January 25

The Irish Coffee - created in 1942 in the Foynes Airport in Ireland, Irish whiskey made its way to the states in 1952 when the Buena Vista café started serving it - this staple kept Irish whiskey afloat in the 1950s.  www.tullamoredew.com

Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Coffee
1 ½ parts Tullamore D.E.W. Original
1 ½ parts Strong Brewed Coffee (Tim's Pick: any premium dark roast)
½ parts Sugar (Tim's Pick: Demerara Sugar)
Lightly whipped heavy cream
Cinnamon or nutmeg

Tullamore D.E.W. Brand Ambassador Tim Herlihy's Foolproof Method:
-Pre-heat a clear-stemmed glass with very hot water.
-Add the sugar and brewed coffee and stir well.
-Once the sugar has melted, stir in the Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey.
-Gently whip the heavy cream by shaking it in a protein shaker with a blender ball - you want a still somewhat loose, not stiff consistency.
-Pour the cream over the back of a hot teaspoon to top the drink (and prevent the cream from penetrating the top of the drink.
-Finally, garnish with grated nutmeg or cinnamon for a spicy finish.

IRISH WHISKEY FUN FACT: Tim Herlihy holds the world record for creating the world's largest Irish Coffee. It was set last year and comprised of five opounds of sugar, 28 gallons of cream, 150 gallons of coffee, and 43 gallons of Tullamore D.E.W. whiskey. The custom-made glass was 6 ½ feet.

CHEF EMERIL LAGASSE TO BE HONORED BY
NEW ORLEANS WINE & FOOD EXPERIENCE
Ella Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award
Dinner set for January 25, 2018

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA-The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience (NOWFE) is proud to announce that the 2018 Ella Brennan Lifetime Achievement in Hospitality Award will be bestowed on Celebrity Chef, Restaurateur, Television Personality, Author and Philanthropist Emeril Lagasse. The gala celebration will take place on January 25th, 2018 at 7pm at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Canal Street. "We are so pleased to honor Chef Emeril for the extraordinary achievements and contributions he has made to the culinary industry," states Traci Beninate, NOWFE Past President. "His creativity and unique style has elevated Louisiana cuisine to a national level, opening doors for so many young chefs, and nurturing a future generation of chefs. It is an honor for NOWFE to bestow the Ella Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award on Chef Emeril, and we are thankful she took that chance on him so many years ago."

Emeril Lagasse is the chef/proprietor of 14 restaurants, including four in New Orleans (Emeril's, NOLA, Emeril's Delmonico and Meril); four in Las Vegas (Emeril's New Orleans Fish House, Delmonico Steakhouse, Table 10 and Lagasse's Stadium); two in Orlando (Emeril's Orlando and Emeril's Tchoup Chop); and three at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Pennsylvania (Emeril's Fish House, Emeril's Chop House and Burgers And More by Emeril). Most recently he opened his 14th restaurant in Miramar Beach, Florida (Emeril's Coastal Italian).

As a national TV personality, he has hosted more than 2,000 shows on the Food Network, and is the food correspondent for ABC's "Good Morning America." Most recently, Amazon launched an original series featuring Lagasse called Eat the World with Emeril Lagasse. The series received five daytime Emmy nominations and won Outstanding Culinary Program.  The series was also a James Beard semifinalist in the category Outstanding Personality of Host. Lagasse has appeared as a guest judge in four seasons of Bravo's hit food series, "Top Chef," was named a co-host on the 10th season of the "Rachael Ray Show," and has appeared on the Cooking Channel with five seasons of "Emeril's Florida." He is the bestselling author of 19 cookbooks, the latest, Essential Emeril: Favorite Recipes and Hard-Won Wisdom from My Life in the Kitchen, released in October 2015.

In 2002, Lagasse established the Emeril Lagasse Foundation to support children's educational programs that inspire and mentor young people through the culinary arts, nutrition, healthy eating, and important life skills. To date, the Foundation has distributed $8 million in grants benefitting children's charities in New Orleans, Las Vegas and on the Gulf Coast. In 2013, Lagasse was named the Humanitarian of the Year by the James Beard Foundation for his dedicated efforts to further the culinary arts in America, as well as his philanthropic work supporting children's educational programs through his Foundation.

The Ella Brennan Award recognizes one individual each year that has made a lifetime commitment to the hospitality industry through extraordinary leadership, personal and professional accomplishments and philanthropic contributions to the community. The Lifetime Achievement in Hospitality Award is named for restaurateur legend Ella Brennan. Her deep passion and commitment has made a significant and longstanding impact on the New Orleans hospitality industry. The award's past recipients include Chef Paul Prudhomme, philanthropist Bill Goldring, Chef Leah Chase, restaurateurs Drago and Klara Cvitanovich, Audubon leader Ron Forman, and local restaurateur Ralph Brennan.

Entergy Louisiana Begins Phase Two of a $69 Million

Transmission Infrastructure Upgrade on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish
Project positions Southeast Louisiana for continued economic growth

JEFFERSON, LA - Entergy Louisiana today began work on the second phase of construction of a multi-phase, $69 million upgrade to the electric transmission infrastructure along the Lapalco Boulevard corridor on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish from Bayou Segnette to Harvey.

"The project will not only enhance reliability, but it will also help ensure the availability of affordable power now and into the future to help drive economic growth," said Melonie Stewart, director of customer service.

The project, which began with preliminary activities in July 2017, will replace all the existing wooden H-frame structures with new single pole steel structures and the existing 115 kilovolt transmission lines with a new high-voltage wire allowing more power to move more reliably and efficiently. In addition, the use of advanced technology will provide added capacity and will allow Entergy to upgrade the lines without having to replace the existing steel lattice structures along Lapalco.

"These advanced upgrades will not only move power more efficiently, but the new structures will also be built to withstand winds of up to 150 mph, creating a stronger, more resilient transmission system," Stewart said.

Entergy Louisiana will complete the projects, Ninemile-Westwego, Ninemile-Harvey and Ninemile-Barataria, in three phases originating at the Entergy Ninemile Point Plant and ending at the three different West Bank substations - Westwego, Harvey and Barataria.

The first phase of the project, along the Ninemile corridor, began work in September 2017 and will be completed in January 2018. The second phase, along the Lapalco Boulevard corridor, begins today, and will be completed by June 2018. The third and final phase of the Ninemile-Westwego and Ninemile-Harvey projects, which includes work along the Central Avenue and the Lapalco corridor to the Harvey substation respectively, is scheduled to start in February 2018 and finish by June 2018. Phase three of the Ninemile-Barataria project, which rebuilds a portion of the transmission line through the Barataria marsh, will begin in the fall of 2018 and be completed by spring 2019.

A safe, accident-free environment for both public and project crews is Entergy Louisiana's top priority. To ensure the highest level of safety, Entergy Louisiana has developed detailed safety standards to meet the needs of this project and the impacted areas. Furthermore, Entergy Louisiana has developed a proactive and detailed communication plan to keep neighborhoods, businesses, schools and other stakeholders up to date on the project's progress as well as traffic detours and road closures.

Important and timely information related to the project such as vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle traffic plans, complete with maps and timelines, will be available at  www.powertogrowla.com to help the public safely navigate around the work areas. Designated Entergy Louisiana customer service representatives will also be on site during work hours throughout the project and a customer hotline has been established for questions or concerns related to this project. Customers are encouraged to call the Power to Grow Louisiana hotline at 504-365-2973 or email  powertogrowla@entergy.com
.

A project informational meeting for the impacted businesses along the Lapalco Boulevard will be held 1p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the American Legion Hall located at 4101 Patriot St. in Marrero.

Entergy Louisiana, LLC provides electric service to more than 1 million customers and natural gas service to nearly 93,000 customers in the greater Baton Rouge area. With operations in southern, central and northeastern Louisiana, the company is a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation.

Full Moon Names
In Native American and early Colonial times, the Full Moon for January was called the Full Wolf Moon. It appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages.
Traditionally, the January Moon is also known as the Old Moon. To some Native American tribes, this was the Snow Moon, but most applied that name to the next Full Moon, in February.

January Blue Moon
When two full Moons occur within one calendar month, the second is called a Blue Moon. In January 2018, a Blue Moon will occur on the 31st. Learn more about Blue Moons !

The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus returns for its eighth annual Mardi Gras parade on February 3rd, 2018! The vast Nerd Horde will once again take to the streets to celebrate its love for the Sacred Drunken Wookiee with the theme... "Get On Board the Mothership".

The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus also announces an across the board paradigm shift that take the Krewe in the direction of an even more Decentralized DIY approach to Carnival.

Chewbacchus consists of over 150 distinct subkrewes, each of which pays loving (and sometimes satirical) homage to the full spectrum of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and everything in-between.. Chewbacchus is a model of creative collaboration and has grown into a self-sustaining tradition.

The krewe's traditional post-parade bash, the "Chewbacchanal" has been decentralized for 2018 into several parties throughout the Bywater and Marigny, organized independently by these various sub-krewes. You now have the option of a multitude of separate Chewbacchus celebrations all over the neighborhood hosted by the groups with their own individual rites honoring the Sacred Drunken Wookiee including a wickedly good party at the Art Garage hosted by a mysterious group calling itself the Chewluminati.

The route for the parade has been updated and will start with lineup along the railroad tracks of Press Street. The parade rolls to Frenchmen and back on Saint Claude Avenue, ending where it began at lineup.

Since its inception in 2011, Chewbacchus has been operated by three "Overlords" who organized the Krewe's parties, events and parades. Kirah Haubrich, Brett Powers, and Ryan Ballard worked tirelessly for the last 8 years to grow the DIY marching group into a massive spectacle of pop-culture enthusiasm and homemade ingenuity. The three Overlords are happily retiring from their positions with the 2018 parade and passing their big weird space baby along to the newly created "Overboard". The non-profit parading organization will be ran by this expanded official "Overboard" of a dozen rotating members who will run the various administrative aspects of Chewbacchus in the future.

Chewbacchus is proud to announce that the three original Overlords of the Krewe, Kirah Haubrich (Dilithium Crystal Hot Sauce), Brett Powers (MC Ghetto Fett), and Ryan Ballard (Space Commander Chewbaccacabra) will reign as the Royalty of the 2018 parade. Join us in celebrating their creation, their legacy and the silly Sci-Fi centric Carnival mashup they turned into an "only in New Orleans" cultural phenomenon. The Age of the Overlords is over. Long Live the Overlords!

"You know how the elves left Middle-Earth at the end of Lord of the Rings? It's exactly like that." says, Space Commander Chewbaccacabra AKA Ryan Ballard. "Chewbacchus is all grown up and can walk on its own furry legs. We're proud of what we have created and what the Krewe has become. It means so much to so many people and it's been an amazing ride for all of us. So long and thanks for all the fish!"
