Two Broadway Standouts: "Water for Elephants" and "Cabaret" | THEATER: All the Moving Parts

In this new episode of “THEATER: All the Moving Parts,” host Patrick Pacheco explores two standouts in a packed Broadway season: The acclaimed new musical, “Water for Elephants” and the latest revival of “Cabaret,” a British import. In the first part, writer Rick Elice, director Jessica Stone, and songwriter Dan Weschler of PigPen Theatre Co., discuss how they adapted for the stage Sara Gruen’s best-selling novel about a turbulent romance set amidst a Depression-era circus. Then a panel of theater experts trace the history of Sally Bowles, the flamboyant and divinely decadent anti-heroine of the musical classic “Cabaret,” from her birth in a 1937 short story to an enduring stage legacy built on acclaimed revivals and an ever-revolving roster of stars, including Joel Grey, Natasha Richardson, Alan Cumming, Michelle Williams, Emma Stone and now Eddie Redmayne. Ruthie Fierberg, Executive Editor of “Broadway News”, Juan Ramirez, Chief Critic of “Theatrely” and Eric Ulloa, actor/writer join us for this discussion.

Says Pacheco, “The creative team of 'Water for Elephants’ impressively managed to seamlessly fuse circus arts with a compelling romantic narrative, one that includes a moving train, an animal stampede, soaring aerialists, and a full-sized scene-stealing elephant called Rosie. No less of a daunting task is to reinvent ‘Cabaret,’ a musical made into a classic through ground-breaking productions from 1966 to present day. What has made Sally Bowles such an enduring character? As one panelist says, “She embodies the idea of someone who just wants to be loved, but can't quite get to the point of loving herself.”

Dead Outlaw/Corruption | THEATER: All the Moving Parts

In this new episode of “THEATER: All the Moving Parts”, the Tony Award-winning creatives of “Dead Outlaw” and “Corruption" join host Patrick Pacheco to discuss their respective Off-Broadway shows torn from the headlines. Up first, book writer Itamar Moses, director David Cromer, and songwriter David Yazbek, the team behind “The Band’s Visit,” speak about “Dead Outlaw” the bizarre tale of Elmer McCurdy, a deceased desperado who “lived” on as a sideshow attraction. Then, playwright J.T. Rogers and director Bartlett Sher (“Oslo”), explore the treacherous tale of “Corruption”, dramatizing the British phone-hacking scandal which almost brought down the Murdoch media empire.

Pacheco says, “The truism that life is stranger than fiction is more than validated in both “Dead Outlaw” and “Corruption” and this episode’s guests point that out with extraordinary wit, honesty and philosophical smarts. The program's levity and wisdom stems from the conviction that all show folk are basically “carnies,” hucksters plying their craft along a midway called "the theater" with the hope that their work will ring a bell with audiences.”

Kelli O'Hara, Brian d'Arcy James, and Adam Guettel | THEATER: All the Moving Parts

In this new episode of “THEATER: All the Moving Parts”, Stars Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James, and composer/lyricist Adam Guettel discuss the bold and provocative new musical “Days of Wine and Roses” about love and alcoholism, based on the 1962 Blake Edwards film classic. In the first segment, O’Hara and James talk with host Patrick Pacheco about the development of the long-aborning musical and why they would risk taking on such challenging roles. In the second segment, Pacheco talks with Guettel who speaks frankly about his past struggles with addiction and how they influenced his collaboration on “Days of Wine and Roses” with librettist Craig Lucas, who has also been open about his drug-related struggles. Guettel is also revelatory about how he has been affected, as an artist and questioning adult, by his lineage as the grandson of Richard Rodgers, the son of Mary Rodgers, and friend of Stephen Sondheim, who served as a mentor.

Says Pacheco, “The musical, ‘Days of Wine and Roses,’ is such a daring and emotional gamble that I wasn’t surprised that the collaboration among O’Hara, James and Guettel elicited such surprising facets from each of them as artists and individuals. I was struck by what the actors said took them by surprise in making their way, respectively, through the minefields of their volatile characters. What impressed me about Guettel was his blazing honesty and wry wit, very useful tools to have when you are the scion of a legendary show-biz family.”

“THEATER: All the Moving Parts” is an hour-long CUNY TV show, featuring in-depth interviews with artists from every theatrical discipline. Premiering in March of 2019 with playwright Theresa Rebeck, the show has consistently garnered thousands of views deconstructing such wildly different shows as “& Juliet”, with its pre-existing hit pop catalogue, the immersive “The Jungle” at St. Ann’s Warehouse, the epic drama, “Leopoldstadt,” and a moving tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Rebeck recently returned to the show in an episode also featuring Charles Busch, another fan favorite. Said Rebeck of “Theater, All the Moving Parts”: “I felt like I was being interviewed by someone who knows me better than I know myself.” Go to https://bit.ly/36hhnIu to see these and other episodes.
