About The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network

Early Career Researchers are the research leaders of the future and key to the UK’s standing as a world-leader in research. The research and insights they generate will unlock the most intractable issues of our time as well as contribute to our understanding of people, cultures and societies. Our vision is the creation of a long-term programme of support for early career researchers in the humanities and social sciences across the UK.

The British Academy has been working in partnership with the Wolfson Foundation to coordinate a pilot Network for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in the humanities and social sciences for the last two-years. We are delighted they are continuing to support the Network for a further three years.

The Academy’s aim is to establish a researcher-led and inclusive humanities and social sciences ECR network, accessible to researchers regardless of their funding source or background. This will ultimately be a UK-wide Network tailored to researchers at postdoctoral level across the humanities, social sciences and wider SHAPE disciplines.

The Network will be responsive to the needs and interests of the researchers and enable the British Academy to support a greater number of ECRs in their career ambitions, through skills development, networking opportunities, workshops and events.

To join the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network at this time, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • To identify as an early career researcher - we define an early career researcher as someone who has completed their PhD qualification or has equivalent research experience.
  • To identify as a researcher in the SHAPE disciplines (the humanities and social sciences) including associated performance and creative disciplines.
  • To be recently or currently affiliated with a university or other organisations that carry out research within the Midlands, London, South West or Scotland.  Alternatively, you have received recent or current funding from the British Academy or Leverhulme Trust.
  • To be currently or primarily based in the UK.
  • We welcome staff on teaching-only contracts who identify as research-active.
  • We welcome those who have completed PhDs, typically within ten years of award, but allow flexibility for those who have had career breaks.
  • For those undertaking PhDs, please do get back in touch once you have completed your PhD.
