How-to Video | Altenew Watercolor Brush Markers Release Blog Hop + Giveaway

by May Park-

Hello, and welcome to Altenew’s Watercolor Brush Markers Release Blog Hop! If you came from the super talented Laura Bassen’s blog. you are right on track.

To celebrate a release of the Watercolor Brush Markers – Spring Garden Set, I created a dimensional floral watercolor card using a very easy watercolor technique.

FYI, here is the list of Altenew products I used for my card:

Video Tutorial

I made a video tutorial to show you how to create my watercolor card from start to finish. You can watch it above or in HD on YouTube.

This video includes:

  • Introduction to the Watercolor Brush Markers – Spring Garden Set
  • How to choose the images for your watercolor projects for a beginner
  • A quick and easy way to watercolor stamped floral images using watercolor brush markers
  • How to splatters on the background including a quick tip for a watercolor beginner
  • How to add interest and depth on your watercolored images by adding dots and different colors
  • Techniques: stamping, watercoloring, die cutting, splattering, heat embossing
  • How to arrange your floral elements in balance
  • My craft desk after the project was done! I also included the bloopers at the end of my video just for fun!

I started by stamping the images from a few stamp sets with Altenew Permanent Black Ink on the A2 size Arches cold press watercolor paper. FYI, I stamped each image 4 times to make sure I get a nice crisp impression using Original MISTI Stamping Tool

Since I used the pigment-based ink for my stamping, I dried my stamped images with the heat tool to prevent from ink smudge. Then I die cut the images using the coordinating dies before I started coloring. I found coloring the die-cut images helpful instead of coloring the images on the whole watercolor paper. Because I didn’t need to worry about my hand touching and ruining the watercolored images.

I colored the images with Altenew Watercolor Brush Markers – Spring Garden Set and the fine tip watercolor brush. I used a quick and easy watercolor technique that anyone can do.

For the first a few petals, I applied the color straight from the watercolor brush marker toward the bottom of each petal and blend in the color with a watercolor brush. But it was hard to control the amount of ink came out from the marker, so I decided to scribble my watercolor brush marker on the watercolor palette first and pick up the color with my watercolor brush.

Once I picked up some color from my watercolor palette with my watercolor brush, I applied the color toward the bottom of each petal and the areas where two petals meet together to indicate the shading areas. Then I took my watercolor brush and pulled the color out from the darker stroke.

To create a gradient look of the color, it’s important to remove the ink from your watercolor brush and wipe off the excess ink using a paper towel in between before you pull out the color. You can go over the image to diffuse the color or to add more color. Please note that I intentionally left some white areas to indicate the highlights on the petals.

To support my colorful floral images, I colored my entire background of my A2 size watercolor paper using the watercolor wash technique. It’s a shame I ended up covering my beautiful background with die cuts.

To add interest on my background, I splattered the background with Altenew Watercolor Brush Markers. Make sure to dry the previous splatters using a heat tool before you add the next splatters with a different color to avoid the colors mixing up together.

You can also add dots using a colored pen to create a look of the controlled splatters if you are not good at creating splatters.

Next, I mounted my colored die-cuts on the card front using 3M foam tape to build my own floral arrangement. I recommend you set the placement of your large images first to help you decide the placement for the rest of the images. Then just move and rotate your elements and see if they look good together.

I heat embossed the sentiment from Altenew Simple Flowers Stamp Set using Pure White Embossing Powder on a piece of black cardstock. After cutting out my sentiment into a thin banner, I mounted it on the card front using 3M foam tape to give dimension.

I finished off my card by adding some tiny dots on my two large flowers using a white gel pen. What do you think? Hope you love what I created for this blog hop.
