Nuclear Weapons Agencies: People Need an Indefinite Extension of Public Comment Periods
Nuclear Weapons Agencies: People Need an Indefinite Extension of Public Comment Periods
Why this petition matters
During the state of national emergency, stay-at-home and shelter-in-place mandates, the federal nuclear weapons agencies are proceeding with public comment periods and public hearings that are part of the 1.2 Trillion Dollar expansion for nuclear facilities and weapons systems. These facilities are located at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.
The federal Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administrative have granted minimal extensions of time to provide comments. In this time of pandemic - something so new - it is highly impractical, if not impossible, to respond in an informed manner to plans for new facilities and weapons systems.
In early April, chairpersons and members of key congressional committees wrote to the federal Office of Management and Budget asking for the comment periods to be extended "by at least 45 days beyond the declared national emergency."
