4.25 Stars! View review on my blog, Libary in the Country

"Have you ever had a night where you had to stay awake to greet the dawn? A night where you could no longer be certain about the promise of a rising sun?"

Advance copy generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Meg!

If you've followed my reviews for any short time, you'll know that Meg Anne's first book in her Chosen series, Mother of Shadows, was one of my favorite reads of 2017. Imagine my excitement when I was offered the chance to read a copy of Reign of Ash! Certainly not an opportunity I could pass up. <3

This is a sequel after all, so expect spoilers for the first book to follow! Read on at your own risk!

This book picks up shortly after the first ended. After a character tries to create a rift between Kiri Helena and her Mate, Von, he vanishes into the night without a trace. Since we last saw Helena and her Circle, they have arrived at the Holbrooke estate, the home of Von's family. We are soon introduced to new characters, such as Von's parents and his brother Nial, as well as reintroduced to old characters, such as Gillian's brother Micha.

A large portion of Reign of Ash focuses on the prophecy and the strain wrought on Helena's magic after her separation from Von. With a piece of herself missing, Helena struggles to control her magic and her emotions. Determined to find her Mate, before the prophecy's promises can prove true, Helena and her friends set out on a quest for answers. As Helena and her Circle discover more about the prophecy, Helena must decide how to move forward with the information and warnings placed before her.

One of my favorite aspects was the friendship Helena and Ronan develop during Von's absence. Ronan's character was given much more depth and I've come to treasure him! Despite not being a member of the Circle, Ronan's loyalty to Helena runs deep and he is just as driven as she is to find Von. They shared some great scenes and Ronan's presence is a strong force in bringing Helena out of her depression.

This book shifts perspective between Helena and Von, which works great and gives the reader a glimpse into what Von is experiencing at the hands of his captors. I felt a lot of dread about what they planned to do with him, Gillian has always given me creepy™ vibes and her fascination with Von kept me worried. When their intended plans for Von came to light, I kept shouting "No! No! NO!" in my mind as I was reading.

The atmosphere of Reign of Ash becomes increasingly ominous as it progresses and I found myself on the edge of my seat as we neared the end, clutching all of my favorite characters close to my chest. I had expected the story to encompass more than it did, I've been itching to learn more about the Chosen and their lands, but I felt this was a great transition book and am looking forward to the next one! Meg Anne has created an enthralling magical world with an exciting story and captivating characters.

I'm in love with this series!

Reign of Ash is the second book in The Chosen series and it definitely doesn't fall into the cursed sequel book category. I absolutely loved this book and Helena even more. This was like her complete revenge book, but like the prequel to her revenge. Especially after that cliffhanger, I feel like the next book will basically be her entire revenge. She's going to be a complete queen/savage and slay all day and every day. Everyone needs to watch out for her at this point.

Again, I loved everything about Von and Helena being mates. UGH, their romance was to die for! They are so freaking cute that I was so sad when he was captured and tortured by her evil freaking mom and super manipulative twin sister.

I can't tell you how many times I wanted to close my eyes or my ears and basically pretend I wasn't reading what I was reading. I'm like that one person who basically screams the most obvious thing in scary movies like, DON'T GO IN THAT ROOM AFTER YOU HEARD A NOISE, RUN BITCH RUN, WHY DO THAT? Yeah that was me in this book so many freaking times that I lost count.

Overall, I'm so happy with this book. It was a page turner that kept me on my toes and the edge of my couch. Too lazy to read in my bed right now people! I need to be near a computer at all times guys! Just kidding - I really don't! I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm hooked on this series. Especially after that kind of ending and now I'm just super pumped to see her revenge. UGH YES SLAY GIRL SLAY! YAASS

If only there were more stars I would add more. This book was one of my most anticipated books and I was not disappointed.

One of my top authors of 2017 and by far one of my favourite authors ever Meg Ann has hit point yet again with the second book of 'The Chosen' Series!

The first book blow me away and made me fall in love with the author and her world, but the second just took it to the next level not to mention the insane ending!

I just hope that we do not have to wait to long for the next instalment!

In book one we enter a fantastical world of magic. The good and the bad. It's up to Helena and her chosen to protect her people against the bad plaguing them.

But evil has taken her mate Von. Now it's personal. Now she has to balance the rage boiling inside so she doesn't fracture. She has to cling to the tiny thread of their bond or risk being lost forever.

This series had me on the edge of my seat. I absolutely love that the hero is a bad ass woman with an axe to grind. The author took me to a world filled with action, suspense and fantasy and I really want to stay there. Kudos to Meg Anne for an amazing series.

This is a sequel I was looking forward to, and I was definitely not disappointed. Reign of Ash is as good, if not beer than Mother of Shadows.
The character development was on point, Helena is no longer a scared girl, she is a powerful queen. And Von has to learn to trust in the vast power of his more than capable Mate.
I liked the new characters, especially Nial, Von's brother. Bright and charismatic despite his difficult situation.
The plot was fast paced and griping, with good amounts off all that composes a good book: epic battles, new discoveries, humor, and romance.
I enjoyed the lore Meg Anne has created. Reign of Ash delves deeper into the prophecy of The Chosen answering questions, and leaving more to be answered, along with a warning Helena can not ignore.
Overall, a perfect sequel that you can't put down and leaves you waiting impatiently for what comes next.

Helena is balancing on a knives edge. Von has disappeared and she is ready to go kick some serious butt. But she can’t. Without Von she is fractured and having a hard time keeping control of her power. So she meets Von’s family and help improve relations with them. But Von is truly in trouble and Helena can feel it. She is bound and determined to rescue him because without him how can she be the prophesied ruler.

There was so much happening in this story. I know, my little blurb makes it sound like a novella. Although I don’t this we got to see as much as I had hoped for, you do get to see one heck of a strong woman ready to do battle for her soul mate and her people. The chapters alternate between Helena and Von. This was a great insight into the story. I really like when the tension with the missing person is shown instead of just leaving them in la la land.

This is a great sequel to Mother of Shadows. The story is just getting better and better. I can’t wait to see what happens to Helena and Von next.

I received Reign of Ash from the author for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

The cliff-hanger of Mother of Shadows made me excited that I already had Reign of Ashes in my library so I wouldn't have to wait and I was disappointed when I read through it. It took about a day and a half, and I hated having to put it down to do the whole daily responsibility living thing. I loved reading about Helena and her bond with Von and the lengths that bond could be stretched and the new relationships she created with her circle and Ronan. There were plenty of twists to keep you turning the pages, and the end left me begging for another page. I hope the wait isn't too long to get the next story! Great job!

Mind blowing follow up!! There are no sufficient words for how quickly this book became one of my new favorites. So much depth was added to the characters throughout book 2 and I love them all the more for it. And with that epic clif-hanger I have no idea how I'm supposed to survive until book 3 releases lol!

This book takes on another part of Kiri and Von and the rest of her circle continuing their journey to Von's homeland even tho he has been taken hostage. When they come to his homeland she is in a depressed state and finally she kinda comes out of it when she heals his brother and finds out who has taken him. She must travel to another place and confront her and her mother. Kiri has a lot of power and little time to learn how to use. Will they be able to find Von in time before other things.will cone to pass or will they fail and have everything destroyed. Thus book is amazing and has a lot feels and does not disappoint. All the characters are amazing each one bringing a piece of the story alive. Loved every second of can not wait for next.

added after my first re-read

I loved this book even more the second time around :) looking forward to catching up with the third installment before the epic conclusion is out in a few weeks :) keep reading to know more about my thoughts and feelings about this gem :)

original review :)

I got an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review :) it's a sequel in a fantasy series, and you definitely have to read the first book to fully enjoy this one :) that little fact also makes writing my review a bit more tricky, cause I want to have something for both: people who are caught up on the series but also for all of you who are brand new to it :) so here's what we're gonna do: in the next paragraph I will tell you a bit more about the world, our main character and the plot in general, so it's safe to read for everyone :) then in the third and last paragraph I will tell you all about my thoughts and feelings about this particular installment, which will include some major spoilers about the first book, so if you haven't read it yet, you might want to avoid it :) so let's get started :)

The chosen is a fantasy series, with magic and some mythical creatures involved :) it's set in a completely new world, and we slowly get more and more informations about it... and I am constantly curious about something new... I swear, I get some answers but then I have even more questions... and all because of the fantastic writing style and the ability of the lovely Meg to create such magical place :) her descriptions make me feel like I'm there, and there are moments when I absolutely forget that I am reading a book... :) and about Helena, our main character :) we meet her when she lives alone, away from the big cities, when her childhood friend comes back and explains to her, that she is actually very powerful, but her magic was bound within her and she was taken to grow up in peace and away from the corruption and deception, because as a part of the prophecy, she will have the ability to either save or doom them all... dun dun duuuunnnnnn ;) sorry, but this moment absolutely needed a musical theme :) back to Helena :) I really like her as the main character, even though she's definitely not perfect :) but she learns from her mistakes, accepting consequences of her actions and doing her best under the circumstances she was thrown into very unexpectedly :) the first book is a fantastic introduction to the main group of characters and rules of the world :) we very quickly learn that Helena's magic is the most powerful and she is supposed to be the ruler... she will also have to have her inner circle which includes five people: The Sword, The Shield, The Advisor, The Master and The Mate :) I am not gonna go into all the details what each position entails, it's much better explained in the book :) this first story was such a beautiful surprise... I did not expect to fall in love with this world and those characters as much as I did, so I very highly recommend you guys to give it a try :) ok, now that we have all this out of the way, let me jump into all my thoughts and feelings about the sequel :) and like I warned you guys before, it will include some major spoilers from the first book, so all you new people avert your eyes ;)

Ok, last warning, SPOILERS from the first book ahead :) we pick up soon after where we left of in the first installment... Von, Helena's mate, was taken by Gillian, who turned out to not be her friend how she pretended the whole time... Helena is furious and hurting, especially because of how she and Von left things between them before the kidnapping... the majority of the book, and by that I mean almost all of it, revolves around finding and saving him... it was a great sequel in this absolutely fantastic series, although I have to admit, that I really missed all the interactions between Helena and Von, since they were separated throughout the most of the book... but all other scenes with her and her friends almost made up for it ;) we got to know more about people we met in the frst book, but we also got to meet some new ones as well :) there were twists and turns that I definitely did not expect... some heartbreaking, some wonderfully vulnerable and beautiful... and after THAT ending, I am dying to get my hands on the third installment :) yes, the situation with Von is resolved, but if you don't want to wait in agony, I would recommend you to skip that last chapter... it sets things for the next book and ends on a mother of all cliffhangers... *sighs* I read the warning before I read the book, but I thought it can't be that bad... yep, it is... :) so fair warning :) I am absolutely in love with Meg's writing style, so I highly recommend you guys to give this series a try :) I will definitely be looking forward to next installments, and all other stories she will publish in the future :)

XOXO

I didn’t think Meg Anne could top Mother of Shadows –but boy was I wrong! This book was even better! It is so well written that I felt like I was there, standing next to Timmins, Kragen, Ronan, Darrin and Joquil ready to battle for my Kiri and join in the quest to find Von (her mate).

We learn the story about the Vessel and Corruptor, and the importance of Helena finding Von before their bond gets severed. Once again evil is lurking all around and they must come together in order to defeat it. Helena is ready to kick some butt and dish up some serious magic! A few new characters join in the plot, with Effie being one of my new favorites. I felt kind of bad for Ronan in this story, so hoping he finds some happiness in book three. One of my favorite lines in this book was “Nothing could possibly compare to the all-consuming ache of losing the most vital part of yourself”.

I will definitely be recommending this series to everyone I know. Also please keep in mind that this book also ends in a cliffhanger, so if you cannot stand them, please wait until book three has been released. I, for one, am now patiently waiting for book three!

The cliff-hanger that Meg Anne left The Mother Of Shadows on was pretty incredible, I was so gutted to have gotten to the end, but when I picked up then next book, Reign Of Ash, I had a feeling that we was going to be in for a treat and yet again Meg managed to do this story justice. She was able to continue on from where she left off and it didn’t even feel like I had put the first book down, she managed to capture each of the characters perfectly and I was just anxious to see how else the rest of Helena’s journey would plan out. I seriously have no idea how Meg is going to do the book that follows on from this because so far she has just done an incredible job. Seriously though, if you haven’t picked up this series yet then you need to rectify that because you are missing out otherwise.

Helena is the chosen one and she is on her quest to go and help make relations better with her mate’s family and the people in his village, but also to see if she can help heal her mates brother. Things were going well, but now that Von has gone missing and is nowhere to be found. With Von gone, Helena needs to find him otherwise everything is at stake, will she find him in time or will there be consequences?

I wish there were more stars because Reign Of Ash deserves a 10 out of 10. Meg Ash is a phenomenal world building author who has a gift for telling a story that will draw you in and keep you enthralled to the very end.
And then even longer as you (not so patiently if you're like me) await the next book. Von and Helena's chemistry is off the charts during this book, even though they spend some of it apart (not going to elaborate as to avoid spoilers).
This book is one of those rare sequels that is just as good as the first and it's one that will stick with you.
DEFINITELY added to my re-read shelf!!!

Meg Anne takes as back to the land of magic where we rejoin our heroine, Helena, as she and her Circle search for her lost mate, Von. Once again I found myself carried away to a time and place so richly detailed that I felt like I was right there with the Chosen. We learn that even distance cannot come between two people who share one soul.

Holy shit balls. What a epic adventure book 2 takes us on. Helena is struggling to find herself after the disappearance of Von. We follow her with her mission to finding him again. But that ending….BOMB SHELL. Meg Anne you can ‘drop the mic’ right now. You’re a star.

Ah this one was so much better than the first one! I managed to get to grips with the writing and it didn't really bother me as much this time which is always a plus! I really did like the world that Meg Anne has created but that being said it's a sequel so some of my problems with description still arose. It was very fast paced and had great action a lot of humour and romance. I liked this so much better than the first one but I still struggled at times to keep my attention. This book was also again left on a cliffhanger that wants you wanting more. If each book keeps getting better who knows maybe by the end I'll fall in love with it! But yes liked it much better than the first one.

"For the men in my life that taught me distance don't mean $#!+
Real love endures zip codes, time zones and lifetimes."

LOOK AT THAT DEDICATION, PLEASE. It speaks to me on so many levels. As someone who's in a long distance relationship (not just countries but continents apart) this makes me so happy.

Reign of Ash continues where Mother of Shadows ended, with Von kidnapped and the whole gang planning a rescue. But first, Helena is going to fulfil her promise and help Von's brother Nial, since they're already at the Holbrooke estate and she doesn't break her promises.

While Helena is doing her thing, there's an interesting development between Niall and a member of the group. Wasn't expecting that.

Helena's magic is going haywire (and not the fun kind) without Von so they need to find him ASAP before the terrible situation gets even worse and the prophecy comes true.

Meanwhile Von is getting drugged, tortured and creeped on by Gillian. CALM YO TITS GIL. He does come to, occasionally, and is aware that he can't properly reach Helena but their connection is stronger than anything, SO DON'T WORRY.

"I happen to have it on good authority that our Kiri is a beautiful and vibrant woman in her prime, not some dried-up corpse."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. He's so funny, even while captured.

When I said Gillian better meet her end soon that's not exactly what I had in mind, but no, I don't feel sorry for her. Good riddance.

We got to know Ronan better, he's becoming one of my faves.

BUT WHAT'S UP WITH THOSE CLIFFHANGERS MEG ANNE? The book builds up to a war and then you just cut it off, why must you be so mean?

Honourable mention: THE MAP. I love maps. More maps please and thank you.

I dove right into this one after reading Mother of Shadows and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read both at the same time because its FREAKIN AWESOME!

I love a great cliff hanger just like any other paranormal fan but damn was I on edge until I could actually start the book!! So much going on that I needed to know the answers to and I needed them soon!

My love for this author is growing because the way she writes builds up so much momentum and I feel like she's afraid to disappoint us, but in all honesty I doubt that could happen! I love the roller coaster of emotions I felt throughout this book and even when I wasn't able to keep reading (because I had to adult) I kept feeling the effects of the book and my mind kept going through what could happen next.

I have to say as much romance as I have read the amount of sex not present in this book wasn't even missed on my part because of everything else she is giving you to keep your mind occupied. I believe with my whole heart that everyone should read this series because I will take you to another world where things you didn't realize could make you happy would be present. You get the feels from the connection with Helena and Von but also the others of her Circle and even Von's men.

Ronan is probably my most favorite of all the men, except for Von, and I absolutely LOVED the connection between Ronan and Helena that develops.

Fair warning....

She does leave you with another cliff hanger and hot dang does this one leave you ready for action!!! I was on the edge of my seat and ready to cry, scream and run around my apartment after reading that ending! I have so many more questions and I am so dang ready to find out what Helena saw!!! CONGRATS MEG!!!!! You did another outstanding job and I can't wait to keep reading your awesome words!!

This author just exploded into my life with the first book and I thought it couldn't be topped. I was so wrong. We get to see a strong woman standing up for the mate and people she loves. As Helena steps into her role yet is torn by the separation from her mate, we see both sides as the story progresses. This author takes the time to build tension, relay pertinent information in the form of prophecy. It is just an awesome story with plenty reasons to continue the series. Yes it is a series no it is not a standalone and you wouldn't want it to be. There is no repeat button this author doesn't fill the story it is all worth reading and a wonderful adventure. The characters are strong and true. They have emotions and troubles as well as success. I can't wait to read the next book to the series.

Last year when I read Mother of Shadows I was in awe. A brand new author had written what was by far the best book written by an independent author, I had ever read and at least the best book I had read in 2017 period. Then just as the year came to a close, Meg Anne did it again with the second book in the Chosen Series, Reign of Ash. She drew me back into the world that she had created with vivid descriptions and cracking jokes. When I wasn't laughing, I was crying. The plot was fast paced and the suspense was insane. I craved each new paragraph like a child wanting chocolate caking. Reign of Ash picks up where Mother of Shadows left off and takes us on a journey that at times feels soul destroying, as we witness the characters we've grown to love experience the worst of what Meg Anne's world has to offer and the best. I can't recommend this book enough. I can't describe how much I love it. And I can't explain how much I need to read book three.

Overall: 4.5 / 5 (Rounded to 5 /5)

Fabulous!

Reign of Ash is the exciting second book in the Chosen Series by author Meg Anne. This story is full of drama, adventure, angst, and love.  I was fully engrossed in this epic suspenseful fantasy story that I read late into the night!  FYI, this is not a standalone romance, so you will need to read Mother of Shadows before beginning this one.

Reign on Ash begins where we were left off with Helena and her circle in the Holbrooke Estate, which is her mate Von’s family estate.  With Von missing, Helena and her trusty circle have a limited time to find him.  She faces many challenges on the way, which affects the people around her.

An exciting and suspenseful story with such vivid characters!

This is my first read of 2018! After placing book one in my top 10 all time favorite paranormal reads, this book will be following suit in that top 10.
In the continuation of Mother of Shadows, Reign of Ashes follows the new Kiri and The Vessel, Helena and her battle against the Mother of Shadows.
This is an exciting tale of battles and wits. Not only that but of love and loyalty. This story gets your heart beating from the many obstacles faced. Love, deception, heartache and revenge.
When the Kiri has no choice to battle the Mother of Shadows to save her Mate and then her Circle , she must decide when it becomes too much to endure. Either fight til their death or submit to The Corruptor.
I can’t wait to see what book 3 holds. This story line is completely captivating. A must read! Totally blew me away!

I can't believe it, but the second book in this series WAS JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST!!!! For a second book in a multiple book series that's really good. Meg manages to blend history with present tense action and intrigue and I love it. In most second books authors will overload the reader with history and overwhelm the story as it is.
I was also very happy to see both Von and Helena were just as loving and dedicated to one another as in the first series. I love that Helena's interaction and relationships as a Kiri with her Circle and Von's most trusted warriors develops. Seriously like this is a YA unknown magic queen story gone super right. Can't wait to read the third book!

Magical Prose

I loved following this story in the second book of the series. It was just as enthralling as the first book and kept the excitement up. The Kira is growing in power and learning how to harness it in a more controlled way. There is humour as well as the drama with new friends and enemies emerging around her. The title of the book is very apt, because there was certainly a lot of ash being created!
I can't wait for book number three to be on sale so that I can return to that fantastic world of magic.

Meg Anne has done it again! To say I was anticipate the follow up novel to Mother of Shadows in an understatement. Helena is in a desperate search for her other half, Von. The one person who she thought she could trust the most if the one who has taken her from him. Now she has discovered the very well being of all those she loves, including Von, is dependant on these two being reunited as soon as possible.

Again Meg Anne has turned what we want to be a love story into a story packed with adventure, love, and a story of hope. Helena must hold the pieces of her very being together in order to stop from destroying not only herself but the entire world as she searches for Von. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone will be tested. No one must stand between Helena and her love or they will suffer her wrath. Although this is a series, and I highly recommend you read the first book, Meg Anne makes it possible for a reader to pick up Reign of Ash and get a basic understand of what is going on. Yes, there are finer details that are missing, but you can continue and not read the first book. However, in all honesty, why would you want too!

Unlike Mother of Shadows, Meg Anne introduces us in detail to the rest of Helena's court and how she is connected to each one of them individually and in some cases more than others. We are able to see how through her connection with Von, and now also with him missing she is able to become closer and even stronger herself because of it.

Reign of Ash is again a must read, and although early in the year I will go as far to say that this will more than likely be my favorite read of the year. However, the burning question once you get to the end of the book. What the heck is in the box!

The second book is just as good as the first! Definitely found another great author!! I can't wait to read the next book. Love that the main characters flow perfectly together and keep you guessing what will happen next.
