Asher

When the Bane of My Existence™ asks me what I’m looking for in a man and offers to help me get him, I’m pretty sure I’ve died and gone to hell. But the idea of Barclay Scott in my clutches is too delicious to resist and just like every horror movie ever made, I get into the car with Prince Smarming and let him take me to a house party in the woods where all kinds of fun and games are to be had just off the path. Even silly kissing games like Truth or Dare, where the consequences of the truth are worse than any dare. Truth: I’ve realized it’s not Barclay Scott I want.

Dane

Cinder Girl has gotten under my skin, and I’m a Dane. I can’t have feelings. Can’t show weakness. The solution is to get her out of my head and set her up with my bastard brother. He’s exactly what she said she wanted. Only the weekend goes horribly wrong because I can’t stop playing the game, and the truth is, no matter what I want, she’s a vulnerability I can’t afford. Dare: Don’t fall in love.

Truth or Dare by Sara Wylde
GENRE: New Adult Romance
NARRATION: Dual POV
BOOK DETAILS: Fast Times at Ridgemont Hall series Book #1
AUDIO AVAILABLE? No

THE STORY:
Asher and Dane are college roommates that do not particularly like one another very much, or so they portray. When they both play a game of truth and dare on weekend camping trip with their friends, it exposes some vulnerabilities which leads them to discover how they truly feel towards one another.

description

MY THOUGHTS:
Asher was a strong heroine in this story, despite her father’s misdoings tarnishing her good name she still stands up for herself. Dane came across as a major jerk at first but as the story unfolded further you got to see that it is just a mask to hide how vulnerable and unhappy he truly was.

Unfortunately, this was too immature for me, it definitely fits within the New Adult category and well I am just way too old to relate I think. I could not fully connect with the characters as I I felt I didn’t get to know enough about them to feel any emotional pull towards them, but in saying this, the book is very short just under 200 pages so it does not allow much room for that.

If you are after a fast paced fun and entertaining read and your into New Adult college romances than I would recommend this.

Truth or Dare is the first book in the Fast Times at Ridgemont Hall Series. We start our journey with Huntington Dane III (commonly referred to as Hunt or Dane) and Asher, or as Dane likes to tease Cinder Girl. The book has an abrupt start with us diving straight into one of Dane and Asher's arguments which leads to them agreeing to act as if they are together for a weekend away with mates. A series of party games and a few rounds of truth or dare lead them to hook up. The pair continues to fight their attraction for each other and the hurdles are thrown at them along the way. The feisty duo leads to some amusing reading.

As a woman who grew up in the '70s and '80s, I have to say that I love the series name. Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a great movie and a lot of fun to watch. As a reader, I have to say that I enjoyed this book. It was different to what I expected, and quite enjoyable.

Asher Cinder Girl Warren has to share a dorm pod with Huntingdon Dane III, whom she calls the Bane of My Existence. She's known him for years, having gone to the same schools and been in the same rarefied circles, at least right up until her father left her and her mother broke, after running away with the secretary. Now she's on scholarship and working in the cafeteria at night so that she can stay in the pricey college. So when Dane finds a list that she made up in order to find a boyfriend, she worries about what he's going to do. What she doesn't expect him to do is to help her hookup with the guy she crushed on for years.

Hunt Dane doesn't show weakness. His father taught him to cut out all weakness. Now he lives to stir the pot. And right now, the way that he wants to stir the pot is to help Cinder Girl get with the guy she wants to hook up with. He'll be able to get some peace then, because she's a weakness, and he just can't have that. So he takes her to a weekend party where he's going to play truth or dare to force the issue.

I thought that all the characters in this were pretty mature. Yeah, there was drama and angst, but we're talking about people who are 19 and 20, who have been around each other for years, and who are now living in a hothouse of hormones and stress. But still, they are pretty wise and pretty mature. Even if you don't generally like the new adult genre, this can be a good read because it can be hard to remember that the characters are young adults.

Truth or Dare by Sara Wylde is the first book in the new Fast Times at Ridgemont Hall series. This was an interesting read. The first half was a bit slower, but I think it was setting up the series and characters, but as I got more into story, the more it hooked me.

Asher became known as Cinder Girl after her father ran off with another woman and all their money. But she was strong and determined. She was working hard to achieve all on her goals on her own. She was going to show them all who she was and what she was worth. Dane had driven Asher crazy for years, and not in a good way, for as long as she has known him. He is despicable and rude, the question is why?

So how Asher ended up taking a deal to have Dane help her land the man of her dreams, his bastard brother, she has no idea. Here is where the story really starts getting interesting in this enemies-to-lovers romance. You see Dane wants to set her up so she can stop taking space in his brain and dare he say, his heart. Asher wants nothing to do with Dane, right? She is staying far away from his sexy smirk and beautiful body.

And so, this story takes you on a journey of two people who hate each other, or so they think. Can they find a way to be honest with each other or will they walk away without ever knowing what they can have? Truth or Dare was a sexy read with a bit of angst. I am excited to read more from this author and series.

3.5 STAR Review by Jodi for Ruby Red Romance Review

I want to start by saying I really enjoyed this book. I liked to idea behind the book. I liked the characters, I even enjoyed reading this book. But there were parts that fell short for me. I'm not going into major details, because maybe it is just me that found this book lacking in some parts. What I will say is that the story held my attention and kept me reading.

I liked Huntington for the most part. I don't like how he came off in the beginning. It wasn't until a quarter of the way through this book that I figured out he really liked Asher. But his games were childish at best. Name calling and general acting like a child is what really put me off. I can't say that Asher helped the situation all that much. I'm all for a good enemies to lovers story, but this one just seemed to miss the mark. I felt for Asher. She had been through enough that she didn't need the games.

I have to admit, my biggest turn off of this whole book was the trademarked phrase. I don't care that the phrase was used multiple times, but every time it was it had the TM next to it. That alone put me off this book. I know it sound silly, but it just ruined the whole story. In fact it got to the point that I rolled my eyes every time I saw it coming. I hate that. I probably would have enjoyed this book a lot more if not for that. Don't let my opinion keep you from reading this book. It was a good story idea. Just needed a little work.

This book is by a new to me author and I'm glad that I read it. I wasn't sure what I would think. I also wasn't sure if it would have enough steam in it for me. But I really enjoyed it. This is an enemies to lovers book with a college twist full of drama and intrigue. It's not smutty nor is it light on the sex side. It packed enough of a punch to keep me reading. I liked Asher and her ability to stand up for herself after life knocked her down. I also liked that she wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted, or who she wanted once she figured that part out. I had a like/hate relationship with Dane (or Hunt). He liked stirring the pot but he was a coward when it came to what he wanted for himself. I was thrilled when he finally stood up for himself and I LOVED the conversation he had with his mom. The secondary characters were pretty cool too and I look forward to reading their story and seeing how this author twists these "forbidden" games into the story lines. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.*

I finished this book in one sitting!!

Yep!!

Hooked from the blurb and once I started I didn’t look back!!!

I loved this story!

It was fast paced and interesting and full of surprises!

This one exceeded any and all expectations I had prior to diving in head first.

I adore angsty college tales where the mains have an off the charts love/hate thing going on!!

I swear - I am hooked!!

The chemistry between our two mains Dane and Asher sizzles right of the pages!!

I was barracking for them from the very beginning and the burn between them was perfect in every way!

The secondary characters were so worthy of a mention as well!!

I was totally invested in their backstories and found myself already hanging for the next book in what I can tell is going to be a series I completely and utterly devour!

What an awesome first book to a series that has angst, chemistry, love and hate, wicked mind games and sexy sub-lines that you won’t be able to resist!!!!

I definately recommend this book!!!!

All the teenage angst and drama of college romances!

Hunt and Asher share a deep-felt animosity for each other that is masking their strong attraction. Asher thinks Barclay’s a better match for her, so Hunt decides to set them up to get her out of his head. The truly daring session of Truth or Dare doesn’t go quite as planned, however, leaving them all with more questions than answers and more heartbreak ahead.

There are some real-world obstacles that this young couple must face, requiring levels of maturity that exceed those of their parents. At its heart, this timeless tale demonstrates that love is the one thing worth fighting for, worth sacrificing for, and worth waiting for.

It’s a well-written foray into collegiate social politics with the stereotypical romantic carousel and air of invincibility. It’s a sweet reminder of how much college prepares young people for life well beyond the academic world. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This was a fun, slightly naughty, enemies to lovers story. I loved the banter and strength Asher and Dane showed through everything. It was nice seeing the vulnerability they both revealed to one another and how wonderfully they complemented each other. I also enjoyed witnessing the development of friendships and look forward to continuing the series to see how the friends find their happily ever afters.

Where the story fell a little short for me was the overall depth. While I appreciated the lack of torment and angst that we usually get with college student romances and the fact that these two worked through their issues rather quickly, I needed more in regard to their story. I felt like it all went by so quickly and the characters weren't given an opportunity to grow. It was more like they just suddenly decided to go against their usual choices and miraculously make it work.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Readers Copy of this book.

This is my first book my Sara and I really enjoyed it and I really want to read the next book in this series. Dane and Asher have “hated” each other all through school. And now that they are sharing the same living quarters it’s getting worse. Dane says he will hook her up with someone to get her out more so he can have the place to himself more. But in reality there’s more than meets the eye. And there’s a thin line between love and hate. But there are people who don’t want them together. There was some surprise’s in this book that I wasn’t expecting. I loved the chemistry between the two. I really liked all the characters and can’t wait to see what happens to them in their books....hint hint. And I hope that Dane and Asher will continue to be in future books as well. I would definitely recommend this book.

What a fun enemies to lovers romance, and it had the necessary pieces to win me over even some OTT drama. Oh, Dane's dad....sigh. I love a good villain. But can Dane and Asher defeat him?

Asher and Dane have known each other for years, and then stuff went down with her dad, and things between Asher and Dane got worse. Their banter and "hate" was so much fun to read.

The truth or dare game was all kinds of awesome, and I loved that we get to see Asher really come out of her shell and really make some friends. Dane also wasn't all broody which was a fun change. I do hope we get to see stories for Barclay and Lauren as well as the rest of the gang. I love seeing them all together and I love how great they are with advice to each other and like any person it is easier to give then receive the advice.

New to me author.
When there’s a line that says Bane of my existence that enough to entice me to read this. Also the title Truth or Dare. Just like the game you wonder what truth will be told and what kinds of dare.
I liked this read, Prince Smarming and Cinder Girl aka Asher and Dane (Huntington Dane the third) such a wanky name so you know what kind of person he is. Cinder Girl is a play on Cinderella with her poor background unlike Dane rich upbringing. They are total opposites and they love to hate each other. The argument, the back and forth banters. They gave as good as they got. I like the two of them together and the secondary characters were awesome. I can’t wait for the next instalment.

****ARC Received for Honest Review****

I was very excited about the concept and premise of this book. I love a good enemies to lovers to book. They can be the best kind of stories, the banter, the great fights and the great make-ups or love stories. I just had the hardest time getting into this book.

It was slow to start, not a slow burn kinda of read, just slow, and once it started to gain some momentum, I had lost me interest or my investment into characters, Asher and Dane. I think that if I was fully engaged from the beginning, I would have been able to be an active participant in this book, but I just wasn’t and it bummed me out. I went into reading this book, wanting to love it but it was a lukewarm reception for me.-Review by Catherine(Catty)

Asher and Dane have been enemies for years and now they are roommates. She is trying to live past the reputation that her father left his family with, while he is a snooty rich kid. When they make a bet based off of a list she made, neither expects things to change the way they do.
I enjoyed the real emotion both Asher and Dane showed, especially in the dark, when they had to share a room. I even liked the game if Truth or Dare, grateful that none of the games I played went to the level theirs did. What I didn’t like was the lack of detail: why were they enemies, had one ever admitted their feelings and been turned down. Finally, I loved how Dane got back at his horrible father.
I will read the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this story and I definitely want to read about the other characters. I thought the story was fun and fast-paced. It held my interest and drew me in. I also really liked the characters. I wanted to continue to learn more and read more about them. That being said, that is also why I gave four instead of five stars. I wanted more. I thought the characters and storyline could have been even more fleshed out. I felt like it moved really quickly and I wanted to get to know the characters more and read more about this story. I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author though.

It took me awhile to get through the first half of the book because I just didn't connect with the characters at all. I know it's the story's namesake, but their truth or dare game came across as immature and gross. Are they in a prep school or college, maybe I missed something but it didn't come across very clear to me.

Thankfully the second part of the book did pick up and it got more interesting with how things played out with Asher's dad and how Asher and Dane's relationship grows.

Despite the negative start to my review, I ended up liking the story, I just could have done without the truth or dare games.

This was an ok read for me.

We meet Asher and Dane, they are roommates who hate each other, yet secretly lust for the other. There’s lots of banter and sexual tension between these two, and some nastiness here and there… ‘cause, well, they hate each other.

Anyway, they weren’t bad guys, yet the constant name calling and being mean to each other got a little boring to me. I get it, you’re supposed to hate each other, but it was too much.

I also felt things happened too quicly and others dragged some.

I don’t know, it wasn’t a bad story, I just would’ve liked more content/depth, perhaps.

This read is a perfect example of how there’s a thin line between love and hate. Asher and Dane have hated each other for years. Well she’s hated him, he has tried to hate her. But deep down she intrigues him.
I really loved all the characters we are introduced to. This is the first book in a series and each book will be about a certain couple. I am real excited to see where the author goes with these couples because I really did like the characters.
Truth or Dare took a little for me to get into but once I was in, I was all in. It’s a quick read that you should check out for yourself.

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

What a lot fun this romance was! The characters are unique and the plot just screams of a good time. I devoured this book in record time. I liked how it was fast paced and how the storyline was set with games. It was fresh and sexy with that enemies to lovers feeling that I knew would bring the GOOD type of trouble.

Sara Wylde wrote a book that was entertaining and fun with witty banter and some good times. Its a book I will happily recommend to my book friends because it is well worth the read. I give this book a VERY FUN SHOOTING STARS!

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. Enemies to lovers at its finest with lots of drama, and some mystery. Dane is having issues with his father and he literally drives Asher crazy. He's the Bane of her existence these two are hilarious, snarky and the banter is amazing. The truth or dare part of the story made the title even better. I actually had alot of fun reading this book.

I loved the concept for this book and series. Each story is based off of a childhood game. I really liked both Asher and Dane and thought their chemistry was pretty intense. I enjoyed this slow burn story of enemies to lovers. My one complaint was I wish that the author had delved deeper into the story and characters. I felt there was so much left unexplored in this book, but what there was very good. This is my completely honest, voluntary review.

Loved this book, but knew I would when I read the blurb . Dane and Asher have love hate relationship and being roommates makes that tough especially when you need the place to yourself, so Dane's plan help Asher get out more by helping her get dates, but that could be harder than Dane expected. Loved these characters and all characters in this book and hope to read more in this series.

This is the first book I've read by this author and it's a pretty good book. I like college stories, the romance, angst, steaminess, uncertainty and finding true love! I bonded with Asher, I would totally be friends with her and Dane is the man that unexpectedly steals her heart after them knowing each other for years. I enjoyed this book and will read more by this author.

4 Stars!

While the trope of enemies to lovers is nothing new, this book was pretty good. Think a twisted Gossip Girl in a college setting. These wealthy kids like to play twisted versions of children’s games, this book being Truth or Dare.

The main characters are roommates and are not friends. They are sort of enemies, but both secretly finds the other hot. Of course, as the story moves on the attraction becomes feelings and... well, you know.

A lot of underlying themes here... enemies to lovers, Pygmalion, revenge, etc., but it isn’t so cluttered with themes that it takes away from the story. It took me a bit to warm up to the MCs, but I did and I rooted for them.

The one thing I really did not like were the characters’ names. They reminded me of stuffy, old-timey characters. The book doesn’t specifically specify where it takes place, so that could be it. I don’t know.

Otherwise, great read and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
