BAVS is committed to supporting activities, aimed at furthering Victorian Studies, of all of its members, regardless of employment status, position, sector or field. This includes, amongst other academics, early career and independent researchers, students, heritage professionals and teachers.
Funding is available for activities such as organising conferences, talks, networking events, training courses and workshops, exhibitions, displays, podcasts, individual research and creative projects and creating online resources, and we are always happy to hear new ideas.
From 2020-2021, BAVS awarded nearly £9,000 worth of hardship bursaries to support members of the association who were struggling financially due to the effects of the Covid pandemic.
Our regular, ongoing funding schemes are outlined below. Full details of each scheme, including eligible costs and activities, can be found on the application forms.
Please note that applicants need to be BAVS members at the time of applying, and that grants are not intended to support individual conference attendance. Information on how to join BAVS is available here.

Amount: up to £1000
Purpose:
This scheme is intended to support BAVS members in arranging events such as conferences, workshops, training courses, exhibitions, networking events or other events relating to projects of relevance to Victorian Studies.
Events might be based within universities, schools, galleries, museums, libraries, archives or hired spaces.
Deadlines: 5pm (UK time) on 30 November and 5pm on 31 May

Purpose: This scheme is intended to support BAVS members in undertaking research of relevance to Victorian Studies.

Amount: up to £300
Purpose: This scheme is intended to support BAVS members in arranging public engagement and outreach activities relating to projects of relevance to Victorian Studies, both in person and online. These might include public talks and lectures, exhibition or displays, public and school workshops, creative activities, Wikipedia edit-a-thons, podcasts, community projects and collaborations with community groups, and creating public engagement and outreach resources such as ‘museums in a box’.

Amount: £500
Purpose: a bursary to support a UK postgraduate to travel to the NAVSA annual meeting
The Sally Ledger Memorial Travel Bursary is named in honour of the distinguished Victorianist and supporter of BAVS, Professor Sally Ledger, who died in 2009. In recognition of Sally’s commitment and dedication to her postgraduate students, the BAVS Executive decided to establish a fund in her honour.
The bursary is for £500 and supports a UK postgraduate to travel to the NAVSA annual meeting. It is part of our ongoing commitment to postgraduates, in helping to provide professional experience and training for the next generation of Victorianists. The award is only made to a student whose application to NAVSA’s conference committee has been deemed successful in the competitive process to deliver a paper at the NAVSA event on the grounds of highest academic quality and relevance to the conference theme.
Application Procedure
There is no separate application procedure for members wishing to be considered for the Sally Ledger Memorial Bursary. When accepting proposals from British postgraduate BAVS members, NAVSA will ask whether speakers wish to be considered for the Bursary. The NAVSA committee will then select a recipient for the Bursary, based on the best quality paper proposal. BAVS will inform the recipient of the award, which will be awarded formally at the NAVSA conference. The recipient will receive the bursary after the conference.
