Digital technologies are revolutionizing the world we live in, and also disrupting the legal profession, impacting how we communicate, do business and work in the public sphere. We are seeing the emergence of new ways of doing law, creating new types of legal jobs, with major investment in artificial intelligence replaces human beings in the workplace and beyond. By the end of the module, students will have acquired both intellectual understanding and practical skills to tackle the problems in the field of law and technology, and the differing approaches to their solutions. The module will enhance career prospects in the legal profession, in regulatory bodies at the international and domestic level, third sector organisations, the industrial and service sector in Ireland and abroad.

In this module student investigate the law of technology and the technology of law, focused on the commercial context. It places particular emphasis on preparing our students for the future, using their law learning in a variety of contexts, able to be adaptable and having the knowledge and skills to keep engaged with constantly changing dynamics of technology and innovation.

Semester 1: Legal Principles

We will address the legal principles and evolving regulation in technology and innovation, such as Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, and Robotics. The course will also look at the legal issues of technology in the context of a major sector of the Irish economy: Finance, looking at aspects of FinTech.

Semester 2: Legal Tools

Students will be introduced to the technology deployed in the legal profession, including e-discovery, e-contracts, Predictive Analytics and other tools. Students will also be introduced to innovation design concepts and rudimentary principles of coding.
